In-situ or side-by-side? A user study on augmented reality maintenance instructions in blind areas

Enricoandrea Laviola et al.

Summary: In recent years, Augmented Reality (AR) has been proposed as a tool to support manual procedural tasks in industry. The study compared three different AR presentation modes for conveying maintenance instructions and found that the in-situ and 3D side-by-side modes performed better than the 2D drawing, while the side-by-side virtual mirror did not improve performance.

Minimal AR: visual asset optimization for the authoring of augmented reality work instructions in manufacturing

Enricoandrea Laviola et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of minimal visual assets in augmented reality interfaces for work instructions in manufacturing. The results show that excessive information in visual assets does not significantly improve performance. Different approaches, such as auxiliary models, color coding, drawings, and animated product models, are suggested based on the specific task requirements in a wide range of industrial fields.

Arrow, Bezier Curve, or Halos? - Comparing 3D Out-of-View Object Visualization Techniques for Handheld Augmented Reality

Jonathan Wieland et al.

Summary: Handheld augmented reality applications allow users to interact with their virtual environment by using the camera on their tablet or smartphone. In this study, three 3D visualization techniques were implemented and compared in terms of performance, workload, and user experience. The 3D Arrow visualization was found to be the most effective, while the 3D Halos visualization led to poor results.

CompassbAR: A Technique for Visualizing Out-of-View Objects in a Mixed Reality Environment

Alessandro Evangelista et al.

Summary: The introduction of new generation Head Mounted Displays (HMD) enhances user experiences in Mixed Reality (MR) environments. However, the limited field of view of these devices negatively impacts the spatial localization of virtual objects in the 3D environment. Existing visualization techniques have drawbacks, and a conclusive solution has not yet been found. Thus, inspired by the gaming industry, the CompassbAR visualization technique is proposed to address out-of-view objects by encoding their positions in a 2D bar at the top of the field of view. A validation procedure and metrics are also proposed to evaluate the effectiveness of CompassbAR in guiding users towards out-of-view objects.

Artificial intelligence (AI) in augmented reality (AR)-assisted manufacturing applications: a review

Chandan K. Sahu et al.

Summary: Augmented reality (AR) is valuable in manufacturing for tasks like assembly and maintenance, but current strategies rely on traditional non-AI methods. The incorporation of AI strategies like deep learning can greatly enhance classical AR methods. Future research should focus on exploring AI strategies for improving AR systems in broader scene variations.
