Near-Earth Sub-Alfvenic Solar Winds: Interplanetary Origins and Geomagnetic Impacts

Rajkumar Hajra et al.

Summary: The near-Earth solar wind is typically faster than the Alfvenic and magnetosonic speeds. However, sub-Alfvenic solar winds have been identified, with the majority occurring within interplanetary coronal mass ejection magnetic clouds (MCs). These events are characterized by low plasma densities, temperatures, enhanced magnetic field intensities, and speeds. The remaining sub-Alfvenic intervals occur in the trailing portions of solar wind high-speed streams (HSSs), with low plasma densities and temperatures. These sub-Alfvenic solar winds have minimal impact on Earth's magnetosphere and outer radiation belt relativistic electrons.

Dust-ion-acoustic waves in a x-nonthermal magnetized collisional dusty plasma with opposite polarity dust

M. R. Hassan et al.

Summary: A four-component magnetized collisional x-nonthermal plasma containing stationary dust grains of opposite charges, inertial ion fluid, and non-inertial x-distributed superthermal electrons has been studied to examine the properties of different modes of dust-ion-acoustic waves (DIAWs). The damped Zakharov-Kuznetsov-Burgers equation is derived using a reductive perturbation method and its solutions are used to analyze the characteristics of dust-ion-acoustic solitary and shock waves. The impact of relevant physical plasma parameters on the dust-ion-acoustic soliton and shock characteristics is examined, as well as the effect of the coexistence of oppositely charged dust grains.

Observations of Pole-to-Pole, Stratosphere-to-Ionosphere Connection

L. P. Goncharenko et al.

Summary: The behavior of the Earth's middle atmosphere and ionosphere is influenced by multiple processes, including energy transfer from the Sun and magnetosphere as well as from terrestrial weather. Recent developments in research infrastructure, particularly in Antarctica, have allowed for the observation of new ionospheric features. For the first time, it has been shown that disturbances occurring in the Arctic winter polar stratosphere can propagate across the globe and cause large disturbances in the summertime ionospheric plasma over Antarctica.

Modeling Meteoroid Impacts on the Juno Spacecraft

Petr Pokorny et al.

Summary: This study analyzes star-tracker images from the Juno spacecraft and finds that the proposed events are unlikely to be caused by interplanetary dust particle impacts on its solar arrays. The predicted dust-impact rates from dynamical meteoroid models do not match the observed event rates and variations in dust flux. The hypothesis of dust leaving Mars or its moons also fails to reproduce the variations in star-tracker event rates observed by Juno.

Summary: The Venetia Burney Student Dust Counter (SDC) is an in situ dust detector that provides near-continuous measurements of interplanetary dust particle (IDP) distribution. It has been used to study the outer solar system and the dominant source of IDP, the Edgeworth-Kuiper Belt (EKB). The updated dust density distribution to 50 au and the effects of IDP generation, transport, and loss on EKB objects are discussed. SDC measurements are critical for understanding the large-scale structure of the EKB and interpreting dust disks around other stars.

Switchbacks: statistical properties and deviations from Alfvenicity

A. Larosa et al.

Summary: The first solar encounter of the Parker Solar Probe has revealed the presence of sudden magnetic field deflections in the slow Alfvenic solar wind, known as switchbacks. These structures are often associated with proton velocity enhancements. Statistical analysis shows that switchbacks are Alfvenic in 73% of cases and compressible in 27%. The boundaries of these structures can be interpreted in terms of rotational or tangential discontinuities.

Relation of Microstreams in the Polar Solar Wind to Switchbacks and Coronal X-Ray Jets

Marcia Neugebauer et al.

Summary: The study found a high correlation between microstreams and switchbacks in the magnetic field during periods of minimum solar activity, suggesting that microstreams may be the result of the alternation of patches of switchbacks and quiet periods. This alternation could be caused by minifilament/flux rope eruptions that lead to coronal jets.

The Interplanetary and Magnetospheric causes of Geomagnetically Induced Currents (GICs) > 10 A in the Mantsala Finland Pipeline: 1999 through 2019

Bruce T. Tsurutani et al.

Summary: Interplanetary and magnetospheric phenomena coinciding with intense geomagnetically induced current (GIC) events at the Mantsala, Finland gas pipeline from 1999 to 2019 have been studied. Although forward shocks and substorms are the main causes of intense GICs, new geoeffective interplanetary features such as solar wind plasma parcel (PP) impingements have been discovered. Analysis of >30 A GIC events revealed that supersubstorm and intense substorm auroral electrojet intensifications are the most common causes, with PPs and forward shocks also playing significant roles. The two Halloween superstorms in 2003 produced the greatest number of GIC events, with a shock-triggered supersubstorm causing the most intense event of the study.

Discontinuity analysis of the leading switchback transition regions

M. Akhavan-Tafti et al.

Summary: The study found that 78% of the leading switchback transition regions are rotational discontinuities, while 21% are categorized as either discontinuity. The ratio of RD-to-ED events decreases with increasing distance from the Sun. Significant jumps in proton temperature and prevalence of bad curvature are observed at leading RD-type switchback transition regions, indicating a possible evolution from RD-type to ED-type magnetic discontinuities.

Summary: GICs are driven by the geoelectric field induced by fluctuations of Earth's magnetic field, which are associated with large impulsive events and geomagnetic field oscillations. Low-frequency pulsations drive significant GICs, even at midlatitudes, due to the low-pass nature of GICs. Longer-period disturbances not typical of midlatitudes are observed with GIC amplitudes comparable to storm sudden commencement peak GICs.

Distribution of Interplanetary Dust Detected by the Juno Spacecraft and Its Contribution to the Zodiacal Light

J. L. Jorgensen et al.

Summary: The Solar System contains a cloud of dust that scatters light and includes bands of dust orbiting near the ecliptic plane. Dust detectors on spacecraft have detected few particles due to limited aperture and sparsity. Interplanetary dust impacts on the Juno spacecraft have provided new insights into the distribution of dust particles and suggest a primary source near the Mars orbit plane. The measured dust distribution, influenced by orbital resonances with Jupiter, provides an alternative explanation for the observed variation of Zodiacal Light with ecliptic latitude.

Collisional Evolution of the Inner Zodiacal Cloud

J. R. Szalay et al.

Summary: The zodiacal cloud, influenced by meteoroid collisions, contains three distinct populations of dust grains: alpha-meteoroids on elliptic orbits, beta-meteoroids on hyperbolic orbits, and impactors that may be from discrete meteoroid streams or their collisional by-products. The Geminids meteoroid stream's beta-stream is a likely candidate for the third population of impactors. Collisional erosion in the zodiacal cloud primarily occurs within 10-20 solar radii, with a zodiacal erosion rate of approximately 100 kg s(-1) and a flux of beta-meteoroids at 1 au of (0.4-0.8) x 10(-4) m(-2) s(-1) consistent with observed impact rates.

Summary: Theory and previous space missions suggest the existence of multiple populations of zodiacal dust, with alpha- and beta-meteoroids being the most prominent. The Parker Solar Probe (PSP) has observed dust populations that do not align with current models, potentially indicating the presence of additional dust populations. An anomaly in dust impact directionality post-perihelion during Orbit 4 suggests the existence of another dust population related to the Geminids meteoroid stream associated with asteroid 3200 Phaethon.

The Formation of Electron Outflow Jets with Power-law Energy Distribution in Guide-field Magnetic Reconnection

H. Che et al.

Summary: Observationally, electron beams with power-law energy spectra are commonly associated with solar flares. Previous studies have found that electron beams are unable to develop during magnetic reconnection with a guide field B-g larger than 0.1 times the asymptotic field B-0 due to the strong deflection caused by the guide field. Using particle-in-cell simulations, it is shown that in force-free reconnection, the development of an electron Kelvin-Helmholtz instability can suppress the Hall effect and produce a flute-like outflow exhaust, resulting in collimated jets with a power-law energy spectrum.
