Performance Analysis of Age of Information in Ultra-Dense Internet of Things (IoT) Systems With Noisy Channels

Bo Zhou et al.

Summary: This paper studies a dense Internet of Things (IoT) monitoring system, where a large number of devices contend for transmitting timely status packets to receivers over wireless noisy channels. The paper considers two cases with and without transmission feedback, and analyzes the average age of information (AoI) for different policies under schemes with and without preemption in service. The results show that the scheme with preemption in service achieves a smaller average AoI, and a mean-field approximation approach is developed to analyze the asymptotic performance of the system.

Coding of Multi-Source Information Streams With Age of Information Requirements

Haoyuan Pan et al.

Summary: This article proposes a new channel coding paradigm for multi-source information streams with Age of Information (AoI) requirements. By studying the transmission of sensor update information to a common monitor, it is found that stream-based codes significantly outperform block codes in addressing the shortcomings of block codes in information aggregation and update scenarios.

Minimum Achievable Peak Age of Information Under Service Preemptions and Request Delay

Jaya Prakash Champati et al.

Summary: There is a growing interest in analyzing the freshness of data in networked systems, with Age of Information (AoI) as a relevant metric. Researchers have focused on minimizing the AoI in different system models, particularly in single-server-single-source queuing systems. Results show that a fixed-threshold policy can achieve the minimum achievable average peak AoI.

Age and Energy Tradeoff for Multicast Networks With Short Packet Transmissions

Mangang Xie et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the tradeoff between age of information (AoI) and energy efficiency (EE) in multicast networks with retransmissions. By optimizing the packet length to minimize the average AoI-EE ratio, it is found that the earliest-l scheme achieves the minimum AoI for small packet lengths, while the preselected-l scheme achieves the maximum EE for large packet lengths. The selection of stopping threshold l also impacts the age and energy performance, with an optimal packet length identified for each scheme.

Age of Information Minimization for an Energy Harvesting Source With Updating Erasures: Without and With Feedback

Songtao Feng et al.

Summary: This study focused on designing optimal online status updating policies for a system with an energy harvesting sensor and destination, aiming to minimize the Average Age of Information at the destination. The presence of a noisy channel between the sensor and the destination led to the investigation and determination of optimal status updating policies to address the issue of information updates.

Timely Information Update With Nonorthogonal Multiple Access

Haoyuan Pan et al.

Summary: This article investigates the information freshness in NOMA information update systems, showing that under certain conditions, NOMA can achieve a lower average AoI compared to OMA systems. Combining MUD and PNC techniques can further reduce the average AoI, making PNC-enabled NOMA a promising solution for information update systems.

Boosting or Hindering: AoI and Throughput Interrelation in Routing-Aware Multi-Hop Wireless Networks

Jiadong Lou et al.

Summary: This paper explores the relationship between Age of Information and throughput in multi-hop wireless networks and formulates a multi-criteria optimization problem by transforming it into a single objective one to find weakly Pareto-optimal points. The study demonstrates that routing paths play a crucial role in determining the optimal tradeoff points between Age of Information and throughput.

Controlling Packet Drops to Improve Freshness of Information

Veeraruna Kavitha et al.

Summary: The study focuses on optimizing the average age of information by deriving drop policies in scenarios where packets may become obsolete in transmission. It is found that static policies like always dropping old or new packets are optimal in many cases within a set of suitable Markov policies.

Age and Energy Tradeoff for Short Packet Based Two-Hop Decode-and-Forward Relaying Networks

Mangang Xie et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the tradeoff between the average age of information and the average energy cost in two-hop decode-and-forward relaying networks, achieving the age-energy tradeoff by minimizing the weighted sum. Numerical simulations demonstrate that both partial relay selection (PRS) and max-min relay selection (MMRS) schemes have their own advantages in minimizing the age and energy cost under different channel conditions.

Age-Energy Tradeoff in Dual-Hop Status Update Systems with the m-th Best Relay Selection

Mangang Xie et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the age and energy tradeoff in a dual-hop status update system with a generalized m-th best relay selection scheme. By minimizing the weighted sum of average AoI and average EC, the optimal block length for achieving the tradeoff is found, showing that the best relay may not always be the most suitable one for updating the status in certain scenarios.
