DIRECT-Net: A unified mutual-domain material decomposition network for quantitative dual-energy CT imaging

Ting Su et al.

Summary: In this study, an end-to-end deep convolutional neural network called DIRECT-Net is proposed to improve the material decomposition performance of DECT imaging. The results show that the DIRECT-Net outperforms other decomposition methods in generating water and bone basis images with fewer artifacts, and the quantification errors for calcium chloride and iodine concentrations are less than 4%. Overall, the qualitative and quantitative results demonstrate the promising benefits of DIRECT-Net in enhancing DECT image quality.

Experimental characterization of an X-ray photon counting detector

X. Wang et al.

Summary: This paper presents the experimental test results of X-ray photon counting detectors based on a pixel readout ASIC. The chip integrates a 64 x 128 array of pixels and each pixel consists of four 12-bit energy windows. CdTe detectors were bump bonded to the ASICs and evaluated for their electronic characteristics and performance. The paper discusses the calibration of energy thresholds, characterization of detector response using X-ray tubes, polarization effects, preliminary imaging, and the analysis of detector uniformity and image quality improvement through flat field correction.

Photon Counting CT: Clinical Applications and Future Developments

Scott S. Hsieh et al.

Summary: This review article discusses the potential clinical applications of photon counting detectors in CT, highlighting their advantages over conventional detectors and their potential applications in reducing metal artifacts, beam hardening artifacts, noise streaks, better characterization of incidental findings, and visualization of high-resolution structures such as the temporal bone. Anticipated improvements in PCD CT are also discussed, including new contrast agents and their impact on performance in these applications.

PMS-GAN: Parallel Multi-Stream Generative Adversarial Network for Multi-Material Decomposition in Spectral Computed Tomography

Mufeng Geng et al.

Summary: Spectral computed tomography provides quantitative information on scanned objects and allows material decomposition. A novel parallel multi-stream generative adversarial network (PMS-GAN) was proposed for projection-based multi-material decomposition, improving accuracy and robustness. Quantitative evaluation showed PMS-GAN outperformed reference methods, demonstrating potential for clinical applications.

High-resolution model-based material decomposition in dual-layer flat-panel CBCT

Wenying Wang et al.

Summary: A model-based method for high-resolution material decomposition in spectral CBCT system with a prototype dual-layer FPD is proposed. Through high-fidelity modeling of multilayer detector, the method aims to avoid resolution loss and achieve higher spatial resolution compared to traditional approaches. Experimental results demonstrate superior imaging performance at the same noise level compared to traditional methods.

Invertibility of multi-energy X-ray transform

Yijun Ding et al.

Summary: This study provides a framework to investigate the invertibility of an arbitrary ME X-ray transform and demonstrates the global invertibility for four types of systems. By testing the signs of specific factors, the invertibility of the X-ray transform can be determined.
