Fernando Cardes et al.

Summary: CMOS neural interfaces are used to study neuronal electrical activity and have the potential to restore lost functions of the nervous system. This article introduces a novel readout technique for neural interfaces based on a voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) that uses digital timestamps for postprocessing the VCO output. The proposed method offers advantages in scalability and efficiency for multi-channel architectures, and a prototype fabricated in 0.18-μm CMOS technology successfully detected extracellular action potentials with low noise.

A Micropower Chopper CBIA Using DSL-Embedded Input Stage With 0.4 V EO Tolerance for Dry-Electrode Biopotential Recording

Surachoke Thanapitak et al.

Summary: A current-balance instrumentation amplifier (CBIA) is proposed, which eliminates the need for input stage linearization and achieves low input-referred noise. This design uses two transistors to simultaneously operate as input transconductance stage and dc-servo loop (DSL), achieving sub-Hz high-pass cutoff frequency for dc rejection. The fabricated CBIA demonstrates good performance with an input-referred noise of 0.91 μV-rms over 100 Hz bandwidth.

A Low-Noise and Low-Power Multi-Channel ECG AFE Based on Orthogonal Current-Reuse Amplifier

Yuyuan Tian et al.

Summary: This paper presents a low-noise and low-power analog front-end (AFE) for multi-channel ECG acquisition. A new low-power orthogonal recombination method is proposed in the four-channel current-reuse amplifier, which reduces current recombination and power supply voltage while maintaining crosstalk suppression capability. A four-order current-cancellation low-pass filter (CS-LPF) is also proposed, reducing chip area and power consumption. The AFE includes an input impedance boosting circuit, DC servo loop (DSL), and SAR-ADC for ECG signal recording and quantification. The proposed AFE achieves a variable gain of 40.5-56dB and an average power consumption per channel of 2.6 mu W.

Tunable CMOS Pseudo-Resistors for Resistances of Hundreds of Gω

Jeffer Mauricio Rueda-Diaz et al.

Summary: This paper presents the design of tunable CMOS pseudo-resistors, utilizing current sources of extremely low currents and transistors operating in subthreshold to achieve large and predictable resistance values. The effects of leakage currents from reverse-biased pn-junctions on the pseudo-resistor resistance are also evaluated. The proposed pseudo-resistor circuit was validated in a 180 nm CMOS process as part of a filter, with resistances between 180 G ohm and 700 G ohm providing adjustable low-frequency poles for a band-pass filter from 0.6 Hz to 2 Hz.

A New Design Methodology to Improve the Input-referred Noise of Analog Front-end Circuits

Mahdi Tarkhan et al.

Summary: In this paper, a design methodology of a two-stage analog front-end for low frequency applications is introduced. The impact of key design variables on the performance of the front-end bioamplifier is examined and a strategy for determining the optimum values of the design variables is provided. Simulation results indicate that in low-noise circuit applications, two-stage amplifiers provide higher gain and occupy less space but require more power than their single-stage counterparts.
