Non-Diffraction Self-Acceleration Beams With Customized Transverse Intensity Profiles Based on 3-D-Printed Meta-Structure

Meijun Qu et al.

Summary: This article proposes two 3-D-printed all-dielectric meta-structures for generating diffraction-free self-acceleration beams in the microwave frequency band. The first meta-structure combines the Fourier lens phase and cubic phase distributions to produce highly asymmetric Airy beams. The second meta-structure uses phase synthesis to generate Bessel-like beams with symmetric transverse profiles along arbitrary trajectories. These meta-structures have potential applications in microwave power transmission, secure communication, imaging, and detection.

Spatial Bessel-like beams along arbitrary convex trajectories based on a 3D-printed metasurface

Mei-Jun Qu et al.

Summary: This Letter presents a 3D-printed all-dielectric metasurface that can generate a non-spreading accelerating beam with a circularly symmetric transverse profile, which can propagate along arbitrary convex trajectories. The proposed metasurface has great potential in various applications such as ultrahigh-speed communication and secure communication, thanks to its low cost and easy large-scale processing advantages.

Use of Dielectric Metasurfaces to Generate Deep-Subwavelength Nondiffractive Bessel-Like Beams with Arbitrary Trajectories and Ultralarge Deflection

Jing Wen et al.

Summary: Dielectric metasurfaces are used to generate highly focused nondiffractive Bessel-like accelerating beams with predefined trajectories in a broad spectral range. Synthetic-phase metasurfaces are demonstrated to produce various accelerating Bessel-like beams and beam arrays with different predefined trajectories and characteristic parameters that are not achievable with conventional spatial light modulators.

Non-diffraction-length Bessel-beam femtosecond laser drilling of high-aspect-ratio microholes in PMMA

Haoran Wang et al.

Summary: By using Bessel beam femtosecond lasers for microhole drilling, high aspect ratio microholes can be achieved. Experimental results show that the depth of microhole increases with the accumulation of pulses for low energy laser pulses, while the diameter increases faster with increasing energy laser pulses. Large aspect ratio microholes with a maximum value of 348:1 have been formed using Bessel femtosecond laser micromachining.

In vivo volumetric imaging of calcium and glutamate activity at synapses with high spatiotemporal resolution

Wei Chen et al.

Summary: Studying neuronal activity at synapses requires high spatiotemporal resolution, which can be achieved through adaptive optics to correct sample-induced aberrations at depth for high spatial resolution. The combination of Bessel focus with two-photon fluorescence microscopy allows for fast volumetric imaging at subcellular lateral resolution. The developed AO method corrects distorted wavefront of Bessel focus at the objective focal plane, demonstrating significant improvements in sensitivity and resolution of structural and functional measurements of synapses in vivo.

Bessel beam optical tweezers for manipulating superparamagnetic beads

U. M. S. Andrade et al.

Summary: The study introduces a Bessel beam optical tweezers setup that can stably trap superparamagnetic beads, with trap stiffness practically independent of beam radius and bead height. Despite the absorption coefficient of the beads, trap stiffness linearly increases with laser power. A geometric optics model accurately predicts optical forces and trap stiffness, advancing the field of optical trapping of absorbing magnetic particles.

Summary: A novel z-scan-free stimulated Raman scattering tomography (SRST) utilizing optical beating technique (OBT) and Bessel beams enables deeper penetration for label-free volumetric chemical imaging with subcellular resolution. The technology encodes depth-resolved SRS signals in the spatial frequency domain, rapidly retrieving volumetric tissue information without mechanical depth-scanning, and demonstrates improved imaging depth in highly scattering samples compared to conventional SRS microscopy, with potential applications in various biological and biomedical systems.
