System-Level Analysis of Joint Sensing and Communication Based on 5G New Radio

Lorenzo Pucci et al.

Summary: This work investigates a multibeam system for joint sensing and communication based on MIMO 5G NR waveforms. It estimates the range, speed, and DoA of multiple targets using a fraction of the transmitted power and derives the sensing performance in terms of probability of detection and RMSE. The system performance when multiple targets are present is evaluated using the OSPA metric, and the dominant factors that affect performance, including the fraction of power reserved for sensing, are investigated.

Millimeter Wave and Terahertz Urban Microcell Propagation Measurements and Models

Yunchou Xing et al.

Summary: This letter presents comparisons of outdoor Urban Microcell (UMi) large-scale path loss models, RMS delay spreads (DS), angular spreads (AS), and the number of spatial beams at different frequencies. It was found that path loss exponents are similar across frequencies, while RMS DS and AS decrease with increasing frequency. This implies that wider bandwidth channels at sub-THz or THz frequencies will cover similar distances due to the quadratic increase in antenna gains with frequency.

Directional Measurements in Urban Street Canyons From Macro Rooftop Sites at 28 GHz for 90% Outdoor Coverage

Jinfeng Du et al.

Summary: This study characterizes path gain and effective directional gain in urban canyons based on a massive data set of 3000 links on 12 streets in two cities, showing large street-to-street path gain variation and additional losses when the base antenna is offset from the roof edge. The study finds that coverage in the street directly illuminated by a roof edge antenna suffers an average excess loss of 11 dB relative to free space at 200 m, and effective azimuthal gain degradation due to scatter is limited to 2 dB for 90% of data, supporting the use of high-gain antennas in urban street canyons.
