Environmental controls of billfish species in the Indian Ocean and implications for their management and conservation

Pascal Thoya et al.

Summary: This study investigates the spatial distribution of six billfish species in the Indian Ocean and identifies the important environmental factors that influence their distribution. The results show that billfish species are more abundant in the northern region of the Indian Ocean and off the East coast of Africa, with temperature, mixed layer depth, and salinity being the key predictors. The study also reveals a spatial overlap between fishing effort and billfish distribution, highlighting the inadvertent fishing pressure on billfish populations.

Vertical habitat use by black and striped marlin in the Western Indian Ocean

Christoph A. Rohner et al.

Summary: The study found differences in the vertical habitat use of black marlin and striped marlin. Striped marlin dived deeper and spent more time at the water surface. Some black marlin exhibited deep diving behavior at dusk and dawn. Both species are vulnerable to capture in regional drift gillnet and longline fisheries.

Gauging ages of tiger swallowtail butterflies using alternate SNP analyses

Oksana V. Vernygora et al.

Summary: Divergence times are crucial for understanding evolutionary hypotheses, but conflicting age estimates across studies undermine their validity. By analyzing genomic data of tiger swallowtail butterflies, we found significant variations in divergence age estimates among different analytical approaches. Our study enhances the understanding of divergence time estimation and sheds light on the biases in age estimation analyses.

Integrating Fossil Observations Into Phylogenetics Using the Fossilized Birth-Death Model

April M. Wright et al.

Summary: This article introduces a new set of methods for estimating dated trees, including the fossilized birth-death (FBD) process and its related models. The article also explores the relationship between these models and methods in quantitative paleobiology and highlights the challenges associated with applying FBD models.

Adaptive markers distinguish North and South Pacific Albacore amid low population differentiation

Felix Vaux et al.

Summary: The study found that Albacore from the North and South Pacific can be distinguished using genetic data, but there is no genetic evidence for population substructure within the North Pacific or distinguishing males from females. The potential for adaptive differences among groups and cross-hemisphere migrants were also identified. Further research is needed to locate spawning areas and explore the functions of putatively adaptive loci.
