Propranolol Promotes Bone Formation and Limits Resorption Through Novel Mechanisms During Anabolic Parathyroid Hormone Treatment in Female C57BL/6J Mice

Annika Treyball et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanism of propranolol in improving bone density with parathyroid hormone (PTH) treatment. It found that propranolol enhances the effects of PTH in bone remodeling, suppresses bone resorption, and may directly impact osteoclasts.

Captopril alleviates glucocorticoid-induced osteonecrosis of the femoral head by mediating the ACE2/Ang-(1-7)/Mas receptor cascade

Xiaohui Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the therapeutic effects and potential mechanisms of the angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEI) captopril (CAP) in a rat model of glucocorticoid-induced femoral head necrosis (GIONFH). The results showed that CAP promoted cell proliferation, reduced apoptosis and reactive oxygen species accumulation, and promoted osteogenesis. In vivo experiments showed that CAP prevented osteonecrosis, attenuated inflammation levels, and corrected bone metabolism and bone loss. The findings suggest that CAP exerts anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-apoptotic, and osteoprotective effects against GIONFH by activating the ACE2/Ang-(1-7)/Mas receptor signaling pathway.

Telmisartan: An angiotensin receptor blocker regulates osteoclastogenesis via inhibition of the ERK triggering in osteoporotic male rats

Mohamed Aziz Mahmoud et al.

Summary: The recent discovery of local RAS in controlling inflammatory bone diseases has received great attention. This study investigated the therapeutic effect of TLM, an AT(1)R blocker, on bone health in osteoporotic rats. The results showed that TLM significantly improved bone mineral density and regulated the levels of bone formation and bone resorption biomarkers, suggesting the potential therapeutic value of ARBs therapy in osteoporosis.

Angiotensin Receptor Blocker is Associated with a Lower Fracture Risk: An Updated Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Jing Wu et al.

Summary: The meta-analysis findings indicate that the use of ACEIs does not decrease the risk of osteoporotic fractures, while the use of ARBs is associated with a lower risk of overall fractures and hip fractures, particularly among males and Europeans. The protective effect of ARBs should be considered for patients at higher risk of fractures in cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension, compared to ACEIs.

Targeted inhibition of osteoclastogenesis reveals the pathogenesis and therapeutics of bone loss under sympathetic neurostress

Bingdong Sui et al.

Summary: This study reveals the crucial role of sympathetic cues in regulating bone homeostasis and neurostress-induced bone loss. The research focuses on the impact of sympatho-adrenergic activation on osteoclastogenesis and identifies miR-21 as a key regulator in this process. Targeted inhibition of miR-21 or suppression of osteoclastogenesis using drugs can protect bone against stress-induced osteopenias.

Analysis of the prevalence, risk factors, and clinical characteristics of osteoporosis in patients with essential hypertension

Hai-Long Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence of osteoporosis among patients with essential hypertension and analyzed the correlation between hypertension and osteoporosis. The results showed that patients with essential hypertension had a higher prevalence of osteoporosis and lower bone mineral density compared to healthy controls. Various factors including age, weight, fracture history, nocturnal urination frequency, depression and anxiety, duration of hypertension, and antihypertensive medication use were found to be correlated with the presence of osteoporosis in patients with essential hypertension. Furthermore, the study found that serum creatinine levels in individuals with different bone mass profiles were significantly influenced by the presence or absence of hypertension.

Hip fracture and mortality: study of specific causes of death and risk factors

Montserrat Barcelo et al.

Summary: The leading causes of mortality in patients with hip fractures were pneumonia, diseases of the circulatory system, and dementias. Higher relative risk factors for mortality included advanced age, male sex, higher comorbidity, delirium, and medical complications during admission. Emphasis should be placed on preventing functional decline and pneumonia in these patients.
