Effects of Different Afforestation Years on Soil Properties and Quality

Wenxiu Yao et al.

Summary: Afforestation is an important method to combat soil degradation and has a significant impact on regional soil properties and quality. This study examines the systematic assessment of soil properties and quality and the influence of vegetation characteristics and plant functional traits in leguminous plantations of different afforestation durations in drylands. The results show that the afforestation years have a significant effect on tree height, crown diameter, root dry matter content, root water content, soil texture, bulk density, soil water content, organic carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and soil quality index. Long-term legume afforestation improves soil properties and texture and enhances soil quality in the study area.

Long-term soil warming alters fine root dynamics and morphology, and their ectomycorrhizal fungal community in a temperate forest soil

Steve Kwatcho Kengdo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the response of fine roots and their ectomycorrhizal fungal and root-associated bacterial communities to soil warming. The results showed that soil warming significantly influenced the fine root biomass and production, as well as the morphology and composition of ectomycorrhizal fungal communities. However, soil warming did not affect the nutrient concentrations of fine roots.

Impact of an Extremely Dry Period on Tree Defoliation and Tree Mortality in Serbia

Goran Cesljar et al.

Summary: This paper presents research results on forest decline in Serbia, focusing on the monitoring of defoliation and tree mortality from 2004 to 2018. The study aimed to determine whether drought was responsible for these occurrences. The results showed that the most significant decline in the forest was observed from 2013 to 2016, and the relationship between defoliation and climatic parameters indicated the impact of drought on the forest decline.

Younger trees in the upper canopy are more sensitive but also more resilient to drought

Tsun Fung Au et al.

Summary: With the global decline of old trees and reforestation efforts, younger trees are becoming increasingly important for carbon sequestration and forest ecosystem functioning. This study finds that younger trees in the upper canopy layer are more sensitive to drought and experience larger growth reductions. However, they also recover more quickly from drought, suggesting a potential positive impact on carbon stocks over time.

Forest restoration and hydrology

Julia Jones et al.

Summary: Forest restoration aims to increase forest cover, structure, function, and species composition, impacting hydrology by influencing evapotranspiration and streamflow. Different types of forests have varying hydrologic effects, with mature forests having high evapotranspiration and water yield, while managed forest plantations have low water yield, especially during dry periods. Early stages of native forest succession may provide greater water yield compared to managed plantations.

Summary: The research shows that afforestation with pine trees can significantly improve soil infiltration rates compared to native holm oak forests, grasslands, and shrubs, indicating better soil drainage in afforestation areas.

BIFoR FACE: Water-soil-vegetation-atmosphere data from a temperate deciduous forest catchment, including under elevated CO2

A. Rob MacKenzie et al.

Summary: Forests play a crucial role in regulating runoff generation processes, nutrient cycling, and water and energy exchange in the ecosystem. However, the impact of increasing atmospheric CO2 on forest and catchment function is not fully understood. With global CO2 levels expected to rise significantly by 2050, uncertainties remain regarding how water and solute fluxes in forested catchments will respond to elevated CO2 levels.

Carbon allocation to the rhizosphere is affected by drought and nitrogen addition

Ruzhen Wang et al.

Summary: This study found that drought decreased the absolute amount of C allocated to soils and roots, but proportionally more C was allocated to rhizodeposits and AMF hyphal growth under drought conditions. N addition reversed the effects of drought by retaining more C in roots, suggesting that plants allocate more C to root growth under nutrient-rich conditions. Mycorrhizal colonization and water, nutrient availability play important roles in mediating below-ground C allocation in this grassland ecosystem.

Large-scale afforestation for ecosystem service provisioning: learning from the past to improve the future

Ignacio Perez-Silos et al.

Summary: Afforestation is a major driver of land cover change in the world, but large-scale afforestation programs may face efficiency issues in providing ecosystem services and ecological attributes. While Spanish afforestation policy improved timber provision and carbon sequestration, difficulties remain in regulating ecosystem services and biodiversity conservation.
