Variational Autoencoder or Generative Adversarial Networks? A Comparison of Two Deep Learning Methods for Flow and Transport Data Assimilation

Jichao Bao et al.

Summary: Groundwater modeling is important for water resources management and aquifer remediation, but it faces challenges due to the heterogeneity of the subsurface and scarcity of observed data. This study compares VAE and GAN for identifying geological structures through data assimilation, and tests their performance with ES-MDA. The results show that GAN generates better quality results, while VAE allows for better localization of actual channels in the inverse problem considered.

GANSim-3D for Conditional Geomodeling: Theory and Field Application

Suihong Song et al.

Summary: In this article, a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN)-based 3D reservoir simulation framework, GANSim-3D, is presented. It is capable of generating multiple realistic and conditional 3D earth models directly from given conditioning data. The framework is trained on small-size data cubes and can be used for geomodeling of 3D reservoirs of large arbitrary sizes. The practical use and verification of the framework are demonstrated using a field karst cave reservoir in China.

Geological Facies modeling based on progressive growing of generative adversarial networks (GANs)

Suihong Song et al.

Summary: Progressive training process for GANs in geological facies modeling shows better performance in visualization, distance metrics, feature proportion, and other metrics compared to conventional training methods. It significantly reduces the necessary training time while maintaining good model quality.

GANSim: Conditional Facies Simulation Using an Improved Progressive Growing of Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs)

Suihong Song et al.

Summary: Conditional facies modeling combines geological spatial patterns with different types of observed data to build earth models for predictions of subsurface resources. Researchers have improved GANs for conditional facies simulation by introducing an extra condition-based loss function and adjusting the architecture of the generator, resulting in high-quality facies models and stronger conditioning ability of the generators.

Deep generative models in inversion: The impact of the generator's nonlinearity and development of a new approach based on a variational autoencoder

Jorge Lopez-Alvis et al.

Summary: In this study, the authors review the conceptual framework of inversion with DGMs and point out that the nonlinearity in generative mapping between latent and original representations is mainly caused by changes in topology and curvature. They identify a conflict between the accuracy of generated patterns and the feasibility of gradient-based inversion, and propose a method that achieves a tradeoff between these two goals for better inversion results.
