Retrospective Analysis of Associated Anomalies in 636 Patients with Operatively Treated Congenital Scoliosis

Nan Wu et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the medical data of 636 Chinese patients who underwent scoliosis correction surgery at Peking Union Medical College Hospital and found that congenital scoliosis is frequently associated with anomalies in multiple organ systems. Intraspinal abnormalities, particularly diastematomyelia, were the most common anomaly. It was also discovered that cardiac anomalies are linked to reduced pulmonary function, and different concomitant malformations are associated with each other. The findings highlight the importance of a comprehensive preoperative evaluation scheme.

Increasing Prevalence and High Risk of Associated Anomalies in Congenital Vertebral Defects: A Population-based Study

Susanna Heiskanen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence and mortality of congenital vertebral anomalies in Finland. The study found that the prevalence of these anomalies is increasing significantly over time. The majority of cases were associated with other major anomalies, particularly affecting the heart, limbs, and digestive system. Co-occurring anomalies and syndromes were associated with increased mortality.

Diagnostic yield and clinical impact of exome sequencing in early-onset scoliosis (EOS)

Sen Zhao et al.

Summary: Early-onset scoliosis (EOS) poses significant health risks to affected children with molecular diagnosis/classification made possible through exome sequencing (ES). Clinical features/feature pairs can indicate the likelihood of obtaining a molecular diagnosis through ES, with age at presentation, the number of organ systems involved, and the Cobb angle being key predictive factors.
