Introducing RELAX: An automated pre-processing pipeline for cleaning EEG data- Part 1: Algorithm and application to oscillations

N. W. Bailey et al.

Summary: This study aimed to provide a fully automated EEG cleaning pipeline to address non-neural artifacts and improve measurement of EEG outcomes. RELAX, a software developed in this study, used Multi-channel Wiener filtering and wavelet enhanced independent component analysis to clean the artifacts identified by ICLabel. The results showed that RELAX performed well in cleaning blink and muscle artifacts while preserving neural signal.

Transcranial stimulation of alpha oscillations up-regulates the default mode network

Kevin J. Clancy et al.

Summary: The default mode network (DMN) is a key structure of the brain's functional organization, and dysregulated DMN is a characteristic of neuropsychiatric disorders. This study manipulates neural synchrony, particularly alpha oscillations, and reveals a mechanistic link between alpha oscillations and DMN functioning. Transcranial alpha modulation can effectively enhance DMN connectivity and functionality.

EEG microstates suggest atypical resting-state network activity in high-functioning children and adolescents with autism spectrum development

Yukari Takarae et al.

Summary: EEG microstates were used to investigate differences between children with Autism Spectrum Development (ASD) and typically developing (TD) participants. The study found that the frequency and global explained variance (GEV) of a specific microstate were lower in the ASD group, while the duration of the same microstate was correlated with ASD-related behaviors. In the TD group, the duration of this microstate was also correlated with participant age and overall alpha power. Another microstate showed higher signal strength and GEV in the ASD group, with different topographical patterns between groups.

Methodological considerations for studying neural oscillations

Thomas Donoghue et al.

Summary: Neural oscillations are prevalent and associated with cognitive tasks, offering an exciting opportunity to link theory, physiology, and mechanisms of cognition. However, careful consideration of the underlying assumptions of the methods used is necessary for proper interpretation of investigations into neural oscillations. Seven methodological considerations for analyzing neural oscillations are discussed, providing a helpful guide for measurement and interpretation.

Beyond broadband: Towards a spectral decomposition of electroencephalography microstates

Victor Ferat et al.

Summary: This study applied microstate (MS) analysis to decompose EEG signals in different frequency bands and found that the MS topographies and temporal sequences were independent between spectral bands, with significant differences in traditional MS measures. The use of frequency-specific MS features showed better prediction of behavioral states. These findings demonstrate the value and validity of spectrally specific MS analyses in neural mechanism research and biomarker discovery in clinical populations.

Periodic and aperiodic neural activity displays age-dependent changes across early-to-middle childhood

Aron T. Hill et al.

Summary: The neurodevelopmental period in early-to-middle childhood is crucial for the growth and reorganization of the cortex, which impacts the emergence and maturation of social and cognitive processes. This study used electroencephalography to investigate the developmental changes in both oscillatory and non-oscillatory brain activity in children aged 4 to 12 years. The findings suggest that with increasing age, the non-oscillatory activity decreases while the peak frequency of the alpha band increases. However, there is no association between age and peak frequency in the beta band. The results emphasize the importance of both periodic and aperiodic features of the EEG in understanding age-related functional changes in the developing brain.

Spectral parameterization for studying neurodevelopment: How and why

Brendan Ostlund et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the importance of the explicit parameterization of neural power spectra in cognitive neuroscience research, and introduces an automated spectral parameterization algorithm. The paper provides annotated code for power spectral parameterization and demonstrates its utility through an analysis of EEG data in children. Ultimately, the explicit parameterization of EEG power spectra helps refine our understanding of the impact of dynamic neural communication on cognition across the lifespan.

Resting state electroencephalography microstates in autism spectrum disorder: A mini-review

Sushmit Das et al.

Summary: Resting state electroencephalography (EEG) microstate analysis has revealed significant alterations in microstate parameters in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) compared to typically developing populations. These parameters also change in relation to specific cognitive processes. However, different resting state EEG data acquisition (e.g., eyes closed or open) is likely to produce inconsistent results.

Spatiotemporal dynamics of EEG microstates in four-to eight-year-old children: Age- and sex-related effects

Armen Bagdasarov et al.

Summary: This study investigated the EEG microstates in a large sample of 103 children aged 4-8 years using high-density EEG. The results showed that these children already have similar classic microstates as adults. The study also demonstrated that the temporal dynamics of two microstates are associated with age and sex, and the topographies of these microstates are governed by attention- and cognitive control-related networks.

Microstates in multiple sclerosis: an electrophysiological signature of altered large-scale networks functioning?

Sara Baldini et al.

Summary: This study investigates the temporal dynamics of microstates in patients with multiple sclerosis and their correlations with clinical and neuropsychological parameters. The findings suggest that multiple sclerosis patients exhibit increased temporal dynamics of sensory-related microstates and reduced presence of cognitive-related microstates. There is also higher activation of a microstate associated with the default mode network. These findings may represent an electrophysiological signature of brain reorganization in multiple sclerosis.

Spatiotemporal dynamics of EEG microstates in four- to eight-year-old children: Age- and sex-related effects

Armen Bagdasarov et al.

Summary: This study investigated EEG microstates in early childhood and found that the four canonical microstates reported in adults already exist in children, with two of them associated with age and sex. Source localization revealed that attention and cognitive control-related networks govern the topographies of age- and sex-dependent microstates.

Early alterations of large-scale brain networks temporal dynamics in young children with autism

Aurelie Bochet et al.

Summary: Research has shown that toddlers and preschoolers with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) exhibit alterations in the spatiotemporal dynamics of whole-brain neuronal networks, including changes in directed functional connectivity of social brain networks and differences in dynamic syntax. In comparison to typically developing peers, ASD children show increased appearance and prolonged duration in certain microstate classes. Additionally, the temporal dynamics of specific maps in ASD children are related to comorbid conditions associated with ASD during early developmental stages.

Development of the default-mode network during childhood and adolescence: A longitudinal resting-state fMRI study

Fengmei Fan et al.

Summary: A study on the developmental trajectories of the default-mode network (DMN) using longitudinal resting-state fMRI data revealed that connectivity strength and network efficiency increased from childhood to adolescence, particularly in midline structures. The identification of three subclusters within the DMN based on divergent developmental rates of nodal centrality highlights the complex developmental patterns of this network system. These findings have implications for understanding the network mechanisms underlying cognitive development in individuals.

The default mode network in cognition: a topographical perspective

Jonathan Smallwood et al.

Summary: The default mode network (DMN) consists of widely distributed brain regions in the parietal, temporal, and frontal cortex, showing reduced activity during attention-demanding tasks and increased activity during complex cognition tasks. DMN is located in regions furthest away from sensory and motor systems in the cortex. Leveraging knowledge of the topographic characteristics of DMN can enhance understanding of its contribution to cognition and behavior.

The development of theta and alpha neural oscillations from ages 3 to 24 years

Dillan Cellier et al.

Summary: This study investigated the development of theta and alpha oscillations from early childhood to adulthood, finding that theta oscillations dominate in posterior electrodes in early childhood while the peak frequency of alpha oscillations increases between ages 7 and 24. Additionally, there was a topographical transition of theta oscillations from dominance in posterior electrodes in early childhood to anterior electrodes in adulthood.
