Studies on the synergistic action of methylglyoxal and peroxynitrite on structure and function of human serum albumin

Akhlas Tarannum et al.

Summary: This study explores the simultaneous effect of glycation and nitroxidation on the structure, conformation, and function of albumin. The glyco-nitro-oxidized albumin showed decreased free amino acid content and decreased affinity towards cobalt. The formation of carboxymethyl lysine and 3-nitrotyrosine in glyco-nitro-oxidized albumin was confirmed. This research provides a basis for studying the role of glyco-nitro-oxidized albumin in the pathogenesis and progression of autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis.

Long-Term Supplementation of Syzygium cumini (L.) Skeels Concentrate Alleviates Age-Related Cognitive Deficit and Oxidative Damage: A Comparative Study of Young vs. Old Mice

Nosheen Malik et al.

Summary: The medicinal properties of Syzygium cumini and its effects on age-related neurological changes have been explored in this study. Supplementing young mice with Syzygium cumini fruit pulp has shown significant protection against anxiety-like behavior and improved cognitive abilities in aged mice. The beneficial effects may be attributed to the antioxidant and anticholinergic effects of the phytocompounds present in Syzygium cumini.

Improving antioxidant ability of functional emulsifiers by conjugating polyphenols to sodium caseinate

Tian Gong et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of polyphenol structures on the antioxidant activity of protein and developed protein-polyphenol complexes with better physical and oxidation stabilities. Different polyphenols were found to either improve or hinder NaCas' antioxidant abilities. The number and location of free phenolic hydroxyl groups, binding affinity between protein and polyphenol, and protein conformation were identified as key factors determining the antioxidant properties of the complexes. Additionally, novel antioxidant emulsifiers were successfully obtained for potential application in nanodelivery of functional oil.

Summary: This study investigates the morphological characteristics and diversity of Syzygium cumini trees in seven locations in Sri Lanka, revealing significant differences in leaf, flower, and fruit morphology among locations. The study also highlights the high diversity of antioxidant capacity in these trees. Leaf area, inter-nodal length, petiole length, anther length, filament length, fruit size, and pericarp thickness are potential factors for further investigation of morphological variation.

Effects of Moringa oleifera leaf extracts and its bioactive compound gallic acid on reducing toxicities of heavy metals and metalloid in Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Kittikhun Kerdsomboon et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the potential of Moringa oleifera leaf extract in alleviating metal toxicity, particularly in combating arsenic, cadmium, nickel, and lead. It was found that the aqueous extract significantly promoted yeast cell growth in the presence of these toxic metals, despite having lower phenolic and flavonoid content compared to the ethanolic extract. Additionally, gallic acid was identified as a key compound in protecting cells against arsenic toxicity by reducing arsenic accumulation and ROS production.

Antioxidant action and enzyme activity modulation by bioaccessible polyphenols from jambolan (Syzygium cumini (L.) Skeels)

Mariana de Morais Sousa et al.

Summary: Jambolan pulp is rich in antioxidant polyphenols, and the study investigated changes in polyphenols and antioxidant capacity during in vitro digestion and chemical extraction. The research found that the digestion process enhances the release of bio-polyphenols with preventive, scavenger, and reparative antioxidant action, which modulate the antioxidant enzymes of S. cerevisiae.

CT-DNA/HSA binding interactions and cytotoxicity activity of a new copper (II) complex

Zhen-Fang Zeng et al.

Summary: A novel copper (II) complex was successfully synthesized and characterized for its binding properties with CT-DNA and HSA. The complex exhibited intercalative bindings with CT-DNA and HSA, resulting in fluorescence quenching. In vitro assays showed the complex's superior anti-proliferative effects on various cancer cell lines compared to cisplatin, with dose- and time-dependent induction of apoptosis/necrosis and cell cycle arrest at G0/G1 phase in HepG2 cells.

Polyphenol binding disassembles glycation-modified bovine serum albumin amyloid fibrils

Govindarajan Prasanna et al.

Summary: This study investigated the remodeling of mature AGEs modified amyloid fibrils by polyphenols through various spectroscopy and microscopy techniques, as well as molecular docking studies. The results showed that polyphenols could transform the secondary structure of amyloid fibrils and remodel them into different aggregate structures through non-covalent interactions. The findings suggest that polyphenols have the potential to alleviate AGEs-mediated amyloidosis.

NMR relaxation time investigation of highly diluted aqueous solutions of silica-lactose

Fernando Esposito et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to replicate a research published by Demangeat in 2010 in the Journal of Molecular Liquids. The results showed that there was no significant correlation between T1 and T2 relaxation parameters at different levels of dilution in highly diluted silica-lactose solutions. The process of potentisation seems to be responsible for the modifications of proton relaxation times, regardless of the presence of silica.

Comparison of anthocyanins, polyphenols, and antioxidant capacities among raspberry, blackberry, and Japanese wild Rubus species

Saki Toshima et al.

Summary: The study compared the anthocyanin and polyphenol contents and compositions, as well as three types of antioxidant capacities in mature fruits of raspberries, blackberries, and Japanese wild Rubus species. 'Blackcap' black raspberry exhibited the highest values of total anthocyanin content and total polyphenol content. Additionally, 'Blackcap' also showed the highest antioxidant capacities among the 12 Rubus species examined. High positive correlations were observed between total anthocyanin or total polyphenol content and antioxidant capacities. Moreover, rutin found in black raspberries and blackberries may contribute to their high antioxidant capacities.
