Prolactin is a Key Factor for Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease in Obese Children

Jianwei Zhang et al.

Summary: This study explores the role of serum prolactin (PRL) in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in children. 691 obese children participated, and were divided into NAFLD and simple obesity groups. Serum prolactin levels were significantly lower in the NAFLD group, and lower levels were associated with increased risk of NAFLD. The findings suggest that increased circulating prolactin may be a compensatory response to obesity in children.

Development and validation of a novel non-invasive test for diagnosing nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in Chinese children

Zhe-Wen Qin et al.

Summary: This study aimed to develop a model to quantitatively evaluate liver fat content in children with obesity by using anthropometric and laboratory parameters. The model, based on indicators including alanine aminotransferase, insulin resistance, triglycerides, waist circumference, and Tanner stage, showed high sensitivity and specificity in predicting liver fat content in both internal and external validation. It may be useful for identifying children with obesity who are at risk for developing nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

The burden and sexual dimorphism with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in Asian children: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Zi-Yuan Zou et al.

Summary: In Asia, the prevalence of pediatric NAFLD has been increasing over the recent decades, especially among obese children and boys after the age of 10. Boys have a higher prevalence rate of NAFLD compared to girls, and body mass index is positively correlated with prevalent NAFLD in children. Further investigation is needed to understand the hormonal and chromosomal origins of pediatric NAFLD dimorphism.

J-Shaped Relationship Between Serum Prolactin and Metabolic-Associated Fatty Liver Disease in Female Patients With Type 2 Diabetes

Cuiling Zhu et al.

Summary: In this study, serum prolactin levels were found to have a J-shaped association with the risk of metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) and liver fibrosis in females with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), indicating a gender-specific relevance of prolactin to MAFLD and its progression.

Increasing prevalence of NAFLD/NASH among children, adolescents and young adults from 1990 to 2017: a population-based observational study

Xin Zhang et al.

Summary: The prevalence of NAFLD/NASH among children, adolescents, and young adults has been increasing globally, with the greatest increase observed in North Africa and the Middle East. Despite variations in regions and genders, there has been a consistent rise in both the number of cases and prevalence of NAFLD/NASH over the past three decades. This trend may lead to a higher burden of chronic liver disease in the near future, highlighting the importance of developing public health policies to address this issue.

Hepatic Fat in Early Childhood Is Independently Associated With Estimated Insulin Resistance: The Healthy Start Study

Catherine C. Cohen et al.

Summary: The study found that hepatic fat in children aged 4 to 8 years old was low, but independently associated with estimated insulin resistance and exhibited sex-specific associations with glucose and triglycerides, suggesting that hepatic fat may be an early indicator of metabolic dysfunction in youth.
