A pilot multi-institutional study to evaluate the accuracy of a supine MRI based guidance system, the Breast Cancer LocatorTM, in patients with breast cancer

Richard J. Barth et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the safety and effectiveness of a novel guidance system, the Breast Cancer Locator (BCL), based on supine MRI images, when used by multiple surgeons at multiple sites. The results demonstrated that the BCL system could be successfully manufactured and accurately used to localize breast cancer within the breast. The excision of the tumors resulted in negative margins in all cases, with no reported adverse events.

Breast Cancer in Adolescent and Young Adult Women Under the Age of 40 Years

Elizabeth J. Cathcart-Rake et al.

Summary: The incidence of invasive breast cancer has increased among women under 42 in the United States, leading to more aggressive subtypes and advanced disease challenges. Early genetic testing and multidisciplinary treatment including chemotherapy with adjunctive ovarian function suppression and personalized cancer therapy are crucial for improving patient survival.

Mode of detection matters: Differences in screen-detected versus symptomatic breast cancers

Anna Starikov et al.

Summary: The study found that compared to symptomatically detected cancers, screen-detected breast cancers were smaller, less invasive, lower grade in pathology, lower clinical stage, and less likely to have extramammary disease. Women with screen-detected breast cancers were more likely to undergo conservative treatment.

Survival Impact and Cost-Effectiveness of a Multidisciplinary Tumor Board for Breast Cancer in Mozambique, Sub-Saharan Africa

Mariana Brandao et al.

Summary: The implementation of multidisciplinary tumor boards (MTBs) in Mozambique significantly decreased mortality among patients with early breast cancer and proved to be cost-effective. These findings emphasize the importance of scaling up MTBs in developing countries to improve patient outcomes.

Presentation and characteristics of breast cancer in young women under age 40

Xueying Hu et al.

Summary: This study found that women under 40 with breast cancer have more aggressive cancer subtypes than older women, with 33.1% being triple negative, 80% having high Ki-67, and 21.3% at stage 3+ disease. Most patients were referred from primary care or obstetrician/gynecologist, with some presenting from the emergency department. 16.6% of patients were pregnant or breastfeeding at presentation, and most breast cancers presented with typically worrisome imaging.
