A pilot multi-institutional study to evaluate the accuracy of a supine MRI based guidance system, the Breast Cancer LocatorTM, in patients with breast cancer

Summary: This study evaluated the safety and effectiveness of a novel guidance system, the Breast Cancer Locator (BCL), based on supine MRI images, when used by multiple surgeons at multiple sites. The results demonstrated that the BCL system could be successfully manufactured and accurately used to localize breast cancer within the breast. The excision of the tumors resulted in negative margins in all cases, with no reported adverse events.

Mode of detection matters: Differences in screen-detected versus symptomatic breast cancers

Presentation and characteristics of breast cancer in young women under age 40

Summary: This study found that women under 40 with breast cancer have more aggressive cancer subtypes than older women, with 33.1% being triple negative, 80% having high Ki-67, and 21.3% at stage 3+ disease. Most patients were referred from primary care or obstetrician/gynecologist, with some presenting from the emergency department. 16.6% of patients were pregnant or breastfeeding at presentation, and most breast cancers presented with typically worrisome imaging.
