The Effect of Advanced Age on the Electrode-Neuron Interface in Cochlear Implant Users

Jeffrey Skidmore et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effect of advanced age on the electrode-neuron interface (ENI) in cochlear implant users. The results showed that advanced age did not significantly affect the quality of the ENI, but there were differences between the basal and apical regions of the cochlea. Additionally, electrode location also had an impact on ENI quality.

Comparison of response properties of the electrically stimulated auditory nerve reported in human listeners and in animal models

Jeffrey Skidmore et al.

Summary: This article compares the response properties of the electrically stimulated auditory nerve in human listeners and animal models. It found significant differences between them, indicating that results from animal models cannot be directly applied to human listeners. Recognizing these differences is crucial for creating models applicable to human cochlear implant patients.

Cochlear Implantation in Candidates With Moderate-to-Severe Hearing Loss and Poor Speech Perception

Ulrich Hoppe et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the improvement in word recognition score after cochlear implant surgery in patients with preoperative hearing threshold <= 80 dB HL. The majority of patients showed significant improvement post-implantation, with predictive factors including maximum word recognition score, age at implantation, and word recognition score with a hearing aid.
