Long-term clinical and cost-effectiveness of a therapist-supported online remote behavioural intervention for tics in children and adolescents: extended 12-and 18-month follow-up of a single-blind randomised controlled trial

Chris Hollis et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the long-term clinical and cost effectiveness of online therapist-supported exposure and response prevention (ERP) therapy for treating tics. The results showed that online ERP therapy reduced tic severity and had long-lasting effects at 12 and 18 months after treatment initiation. The economic evaluation indicated that online ERP therapy is a cost-effective intervention.

Internet-based guided self-help comprehensive behavioral intervention for tics (ICBIT) for youth with tic disorders: a feasibility and effectiveness study with 6 month-follow-up

Lilach Rachamim et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the feasibility and potential effectiveness of an Internet-based, self-help CBIT program guided by parents with minimal therapist support delivered via telepsychotherapy. The results demonstrated significant improvement in tic disorders among youth using the ICBIT program, and the treatment was able to be delivered continuously during the COVID-19 pandemic.

ONLINE-TICS: Internet-Delivered Behavioral Treatment for Patients with Chronic Tic Disorders

Martina Haas et al.

Summary: Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics (CBIT) is a first-line therapy for tics, but its availability is limited due to a lack of qualified therapists. This study suggests that internet-delivered, therapist-independent CBIT intervention (iCBIT) is superior to placebo in treating tics, and the treatment effects of iCBIT even increase over time.

European clinical guidelines for Tourette syndrome and other tic disorders-version 2.0. Part II: psychological interventions

Per Andren et al.

Summary: Part II of the European clinical guidelines for Tourette syndrome and other tic disorders provides updated information and recommendations for psychological interventions, recommending Habit Reversal Training (HRT) and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) as first-line interventions for tic disorders. Cognitive interventions and third-wave interventions are currently not recommended as stand-alone treatments for tic disorders.

Long-term Outcomes of Behavior Therapy for Youth With Tourette Disorder

Flint M. Espil et al.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the long-term durability of behavior therapy for youth with Tourette disorder and persistent tic disorders. The results showed that behavior therapy achieved partial tic remission in some patients, and the severity of tics decreased across the sample. The study supports behavior therapy as the first-line intervention for tics.

Summary: The Online Remote Behavioural Intervention for Tics (ORBIT) trial showed that an internet-delivered, therapist-supported, and parent-assisted Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) intervention can reduce tic severity and improve clinical outcomes. Parental engagement was found to be the key factor in successful clinical improvement.

Tackle your Tics: pilot findings of a brief, intensive group-based exposure therapy program for children with tic disorders

A. P. Heijerman-Holtgrefe et al.

Summary: This pilot study investigated the feasibility and preliminary results of a brief, intensive group-based treatment for tic disorders. The treatment, called Tackle your Tics, showed positive outcomes in terms of treatment satisfaction, improvement in tic severity, and quality of life. Intensive ERP in group format appears promising in improving both tic severity and quality of life, with larger controlled trials needed to establish its effectiveness.

Effect of an Internet-Delivered Stepped-Care Program vs In-Person Cognitive Behavioral Therapy on Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Symptoms in Children and Adolescents: A Randomized Clinical Trial

Kristina Aspvall et al.

Summary: The study showed that the internet-delivered cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) program followed by traditional in-person CBT if necessary was noninferior to in-person CBT alone for treating children and adolescents with obsessive-compulsive disorder. There was no significant difference in symptoms between the two groups at the 6-month follow-up. Despite varying treatment responses, overall, the noninferiority of internet-delivered CBT was confirmed.
