A qualitative evaluation of coproduction of research: 'If you do it properly, you will get turbulence'

Joanne Deborah Worsley et al.

Summary: The study findings suggest that a successful coproduction of a research funding application requires the establishment of an open and trusting atmosphere, the establishment of equal relationships, and the agreement on a shared common goal. While some public advisors had relationships with research professionals framed by trust and mutual respect, others felt a sense of "us and them". Challenges such as interpersonal conflict, difficult conversations, and disagreements may arise in coproduction, making the experience less positive for all stakeholders involved.
