Physicians' Opinion and Practice With the Continuous Use of Sedatives in the Last Days of Life

Madelon T. Heijltjes et al.

Summary: This study describes the experiences and opinions of physicians caring for terminally ill patients regarding the continuous use of sedatives (CUS) in the last days of life. The majority of physicians considered CUS acceptable for the relief of physical and psycho-existential suffering in the last days of life, but the acceptability was lower for psycho-existential suffering and for patients with a longer life expectancy.

Patient participation in shared decision-making in palliative care - an integrative review

Lotta Kuosmanen et al.

Summary: Research findings show that patients actively participate in shared decision-making in palliative care, desiring involvement in everyday nursing care, treatment decisions, and end-of-life decisions. Interdisciplinary teamwork, open communication, a good patient-professional relationship, a conducive environment, and mutual information are prerequisites for patient participation in shared decision-making.
