Lofting of low-speed ejecta produced in the DART experiment and production of a dust cloud

Gonzalo Tancredi et al.

Summary: NASA sent the DART mission to target Dimorphos, the satellite of the asteroid binary system Didymos, in order to impact it. The impact will create a crater and eject a large amount of material at high speed, causing a dispersed ejecta cone. In addition to this, seismic waves generated by the impact will lead to the lifting of material at low velocity, resulting in shaking on the surface of Dimorphos far from the impact point. Observable effects include the generation of a dust cloud, increased brightness of the binary system, and the formation of a dust trail that can last for weeks. The amount and distribution of ejected particles, which are currently unknown, will determine the detectability of these effects.

Revisiting Nesterenko's solitary wave in the precompressed granular alignment held between fixed ends

Tengfei Jiao et al.

Summary: The response of a granular alignment to an impulse between fixed end walls was studied by Nesterenko. He showed that a granular chain can propagate a solitary wave, which was also confirmed by later studies. However, there are discrepancies between the observed solitary wave behavior at zero precompression and the proposed KdV solution. The existence of a separate solitary wave phase at weak but finite loading regime may explain this discrepancy.

Shockwaves in Jammed Ductile Granular Media

R. Devanjith J. Fonseka et al.

Summary: We investigated shock propagation in confined, frictionless granular media using discrete element simulations with an elastoplastic contact law. The results showed that elastoplastic systems can exhibit either weak or strong shock propagation responses, which differ from the elastic case. Two modes of dynamic stress propagation were observed, weak shocks transmitting stress through the initial contact path and strong shocks forming new contact networks behind the front. Unlike elastic shock propagation, strong shocks had an upper bound to their front velocity, depending on the maximum intergranular contact stiffness. Additionally, the results demonstrated that dissipation is increased with confining pressure in the weak shock regime due to the dissipative nature of elastoplastic contact.

Near-zero cohesion and loose packing of Bennu's near subsurface revealed by spacecraft contact

Kevin J. Walsh et al.

Summary: The sample collection from Bennu by the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft allowed for a direct test of the physical properties of rubble-pile asteroids. The study found that the surface of Bennu can be best modeled as a granular bed with near-zero cohesion and half the density of the bulk asteroid. The low gravity of small rubble-pile asteroids weakens their near subsurface, minimizing the influence of interparticle cohesion on surface geology.

Propagation and attenuation of pulses driven by low velocity normal impacts in granular media

A. C. Quillen et al.

Summary: In this study, we conducted low velocity normal impacts on granular materials and found that the longitudinal pulses excited by impact attenuate and spread as they travel away from the impact site. Using a model, we estimated the relationship between pulse properties and travel distance from the impact site, and observed a decay in peak pressure, velocity, and seismic energy as distance increases. Our experimental results support a seismic jolt model and we applied our model to estimate the physical properties of the seismic pulse generated by the upcoming mission impact on the asteroid Dimorphos.

Transmission of a Seismic Wave Generated by Impacts on Granular Asteroids

Paul Sanchez et al.

Summary: In this paper, a soft-sphere discrete element method code is used to simulate the transmission and study the attenuation of a seismic wave. The results are then applied to different space missions and impacts on small bodies in the solar system. The findings show that the seismic wave speed is directly dependent on the velocity of the impact and the total pressure. It is also observed that energy dissipation is high regardless of the pressure and impact velocity. These findings provide insights into the movement of particles on the surface of small bodies and the potential effects of hypervelocity impacts.
