The Nazas Arc is a continental rift province: Implications for Mesozoic tectonic reconstructions of the southwest Cordillera, US and Mexico

C. J. Busby et al.

Summary: This study rejects the existence of the Nazas continental arc in eastern Mexico and proposes that the Jurassic continental arc of the SW Cordilleran U.S. and northern Sonora, Mexico, extended into the oceanic realm. It provides geological evidence to support this theory and highlights the differences between the Nazas arc and the proposed Jurassic arc.

A geochronological review of magmatism along the external margin of Columbia and in the Grenville-age orogens forming the core of Rodinia

Ake Johansson et al.

Summary: This research compiles a large amount of magmatic U-Pb ages data from different blocks, revealing the temporal relationships and geological events among various blocks during the formation of Columbia and Rodinia. There is a certain degree of correlation between various blocks, but there are also significant differences.

Early Mesoproterozoic inliers in the Chiapas Massif Complex of southern Mexico: Implications on Oaxaquia-Amazonia-Baltica configuration

Yuly Tatiana Valencia-Morales et al.

Summary: This contribution reports on the geochronology and isotope systematics of metaigneous rocks from the central Chiapas Massif Complex in southern Mexico. The study reveals the presence of a Paleo- to early Mesoproterozoic crust within the complex, which is distinct from surrounding units. The data suggest the existence of a distinct crustal slice named the Catarina Unit, based on the Sm-Nd isotope systematics. The research also provides insights into the crustal evolution and tectonic events in the region.

The petrogenesis of modern and ophiolitic lavas reconsidered: Ti-V and Nb-Th

John W. Shervais

Summary: Tectonic discrimination diagrams are important tools for understanding the origins of ancient volcanic rocks. This study re-evaluates the Ti-V and Nb/Yb-Th/Yb diagrams using a compilation of over 15,000 whole rock compositions. A new two-proxy diagram, Ti/V vs. Th/Nb, is proposed to combine the advantages of both diagrams.

On the origins of the Iapetus ocean

Boris Robert et al.

Summary: The study reconsiders the timing and framework of Iapetus opening by integrating observational records from Laurentia, Baltica, and Amazonia. By combining paleomagnetic data and a review of the mid-Neoproterozoic to Cambrian geology, a consistent and geodynamically feasible plate tectonic model is constructed. The breakup of the continents was polyphase, involving the opening of several oceans, including the Iapetus Ocean.

The Sveconorwegian orogeny

Bernard Bingen et al.

Summary: This article reviews the geology and tectonic models of the Sveconorwegian orogeny, proposing an updated geodynamic scenario of a large continental collision starting at around 1065 Ma. It discusses the formation of an orogenic plateau, extensive magmatism, and metamorphic events, pointing towards a shallow asthenosphere under the crust and a retreating delamination of the dense sub-continental lithospheric mantle. The orogenic plateau eventually collapsed around 930 Ma, with extensive erosion removing overburden.

Using zircon in mafic migmatites to disentangle complex high-grade gneiss terrains - Terrane spotting in the Lewisian complex, NW Scotland

Sebastian Fischer et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the zircon record of high-grade gneiss terrains, particularly on metamorphosed mafic rocks and their in situ leucosomes. By analyzing the metamorphic ages of mafic migmatites in the central region of the Lewisian complex, it is found that the age clusters are similar across disparate terrane blocks, suggesting a common pre-metamorphic history and questioning the validity of the terrane model. Mafic lithologies provide valuable insights into the complex evolution of metamorphic complexes and offer additional context for understanding Earth's geodynamic evolution.
