Impacts of Extreme Climates on Vegetation at Middle-to-High Latitudes in Asia

Yuchen Wei et al.

Summary: This study investigated the synchronous responses of vegetation to extreme temperatures and precipitation in middle-to-high latitudes in Asia. The results revealed that areas with maximum or minimum leaf area index (LAI) expanded or contracted with global warming. Both GIMMS and GLASS LAI peaked in spring and autumn, while reaching their respective minimums in different seasons. The datasets were consistent in showing how vegetation responds to extreme climate conditions, particularly in tree-covered areas.

Sensitivity of Vegetation to Climate in Mid-to-High Latitudes of Asia and Future Vegetation Projections

Jiangfeng Wei et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the response of vegetation in mid- to high-latitude Asia to climate elements and predicts the future changes in leaf area index (LAI) using machine learning models and climate model data. The historical increase in LAI since 1982 is mainly caused by rising temperatures, while interannual variations are influenced by precipitation and solar radiation. The LAI is projected to increase in most of the region, with stronger trends under the high emission scenario.

CMIP6 Evaluation and Projection of Precipitation over Northern China: Further Investigation

Xiaoling Yang et al.

Summary: This article uses 20 models from the CMIP6 to explore the reasons for differences in simulation biases and projected changes in precipitation in northern China. The results show that the highest-ranked model ensemble (BMME) performs better in reproducing winter circulations and reducing overestimation of evaporation compared to the all-model ensemble (AMME) and lowest-ranked model ensemble (WMME). The BMME also projects larger increases in precipitation in northern China by the end of the 21st century.

The British-Okhotsk Corridor Pattern and Its Linkage to the Silk Road Pattern

Peiqiang Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the newly-defined major summer teleconnection along the polar front jet (PFJ), the British-Okhotsk Corridor (BOC) pattern, by using observation and reanalysis datasets, numerical experiments, and climate model output. The BOC pattern is occasionally coupled to the dominant teleconnection along the subtropical jet (STJ), the Silk Road pattern (SRP). The fluctuations of this linkage play a significant role in shaping the dominant climate variability modes over Eurasia.

In-Phase Variations of Spring and Summer Droughts over Northeast China and Their Relationship with the North Atlantic Oscillation

Yuepeng Hu et al.

Summary: Using the S-EOF analysis, this study finds an in-phase change of drought from spring to summer in Northeast China, associated with geopotential height anomalies around Lake Baikal. The study also shows that the spring NAO plays a significant role in the in-phase change of spring-summer droughts over Northeast China, through the combined effects of zonal wave train and central Siberian soil moisture. These findings contribute to a better understanding of drought in Northeast China and have implications for disaster prevention and mitigation.

Synergistic Impacts of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans on Interdecadal Variations of Summer Rainfall in Northeast Asia

Summary: The study demonstrates the synergistic impacts of AMO and PDO on the interdecadal variations of summer rainfall in Northeast Asia. The phase relationship between AMO and PDO can lead to different climate patterns, influencing the behavior of East Asian summer monsoon and pressure systems in Northeast Asia.
