Disrupting cortical astrocyte Ca2+ signaling in developing brain induces social deficits and depressive-like behaviors

Rong Luo et al.

Summary: In this study, researchers investigated the role of astrocytic calcium signals in neural microcircuits and mammalian behavior by overexpressing PMCA2 in cortical astrocytes. They found that reducing astrocyte calcium signaling during development resulted in social interaction deficits, depressive-like behavior, and abnormal synaptic structure and transmission. Restoring astrocyte calcium signaling rescued these deficits. These findings highlight the critical importance of cortical astrocyte calcium signaling in neural circuit development and its potential involvement in developmental neuropsychiatric diseases.

Adult Neurogenesis under Control of the Circadian System

Amira A. H. Ali et al.

Summary: This review discusses the role of the circadian system in adult neurogenesis at both the systemic and cellular levels. Better understanding of this role can help develop new treatment strategies to improve cognitive deterioration associated with chronodisruption or neurodegenerative diseases.

Single cell atlas of spinal cord injury in mice reveals a pro-regenerative signature in spinocerebellar neurons

Kaya J. E. Matson et al.

Summary: After spinal cord injury, certain cells in the injured area show potential for regeneration. By analyzing different cell types in the spinal cord of mice, this study identifies spinal neurons that express regeneration characteristics and describes their anatomical features. The study provides a valuable resource for understanding cellular responses to injury and highlights the spontaneous plasticity of spinocerebellar neurons as a potential target for targeted therapy.

A harmonized atlas of mouse spinal cord cell types and their spatial organization

Daniel E. Russ et al.

Summary: Single-cell RNA sequencing data is used to generate a comprehensive cell atlas of mouse post-natal spinal cord, revealing the hierarchical relationships among cell types and providing spatial analysis of their distribution. Additionally, an open-source cell type classifier, SeqSeek, is developed to facilitate standardized cell type identification.

Widespread Decrease of Cerebral Vimentin-Immunoreactive Astrocytes in Depressed Suicides

Liam Anuj O'Leary et al.

Summary: The study revealed a widespread reduction in the density of cerebral VIM-IR astrocytes in cases of depression and suicide compared to controls, further implicating astrocytic dysfunctions in these conditions.
