FG-Net: A Fast and Accurate Framework for Large-Scale LiDAR Point Cloud Understanding

Kangcheng Liu et al.

Summary: This work introduces a general deep learning framework, FG-Net, for large-scale point cloud understanding. It includes a novel noise and outlier filtering method, a plug-and-play module for feature extraction and relationship modeling, and operations and strategies to enhance computational efficiency and memory consumption. Experimental results on multiple benchmarks demonstrate that our approaches outperform state-of-the-art methods in accuracy, speed, and memory efficiency, and also show the generalization capacity through weakly supervised transfer learning.

Country-wide data of ecosystem structure from the third Dutch airborne laser scanning survey

W. Daniel Kissling et al.

Summary: The third Dutch national airborne laser scanning flight campaign collected a large dataset with billions of points, providing detailed information on the ecosystem structure. The dataset was processed into raster layers of vegetation structure metrics, allowing for ecological and biodiversity research. The accuracy of the derived metrics was high, and potential biases in the data were addressed through validation and additional masking. The dataset has significant importance in ecology and biodiversity science.

Vegetation structure derived from airborne laser scanning to assess species distribution and habitat suitability: The way forward

Vitezslav Moudry et al.

Summary: Ecosystem structure, especially vertical vegetation structure, plays a crucial role in habitat heterogeneity and species distributions. However, deriving detailed information about vertical vegetation structure from ALS point clouds requires specialized skills that most ecologists do not possess. Accessible and consistent variables on vegetation structure should be provided through national data portals to facilitate ecological and biodiversity research and guide users in the face of increasing availability of global vegetation structure products.

High-resolution forest carbon mapping for climate mitigation baselines over the RGGI region, USA

Hao Tang et al.

Summary: Large-scale airborne lidar data collections can be used to generate high-resolution forest aboveground biomass maps at the state level and beyond, showing potential for forest carbon planning. This study refines a multi-state level forest carbon monitoring framework to address spatial inconsistencies caused by data quality variability. The use of a linear model maintains good prediction accuracy of aboveground biomass density and mitigates problems related to data quality variability, leading to the generation of a consistent 30 m pixel forest aboveground carbon map covering 11 states in the USA.
