Projecting Stratocumulus Transitions on the Albedo-Cloud Fraction Relationship Reveals Linearity of Albedo to Droplet Concentrations

Tom Goren et al.

Summary: This study uses satellite images to observe the breakup of marine cloud decks and finds that aerosols delay the breakup, affecting the cloud's radiative effect. It provides the first estimate of the radiative effect due to delayed cloud breakup and finds a linear relationship between radiative effect and aerosols, potentially exacerbating global warming.

Quantifying albedo susceptibility biases in shallow clouds

Graham Feingold et al.

Summary: The evaluation of radiative forcing associated with aerosol-cloud interactions is a significant source of uncertainty in future climate projections. Aerosol particles influence clouds locally, and averaging to larger spatial and temporal scales carries biases due to the heterogeneity and spatial correlation of the interacting fields and the nonlinearity of the responses. The study finds that spatial aggregation biases can be on the order of hundreds of percent, depending on the methodology. Key uncertainties arise from the adiabatic drop concentration retrieval, the correlation between aerosol and cloud fields, and the extent of averaging. Temporal aggregation biases offset spatial aggregation biases. These spatial and temporal biases have significant implications for observing aerosol indirect effects and inferring aerosol-cloud-radiation effects.

Opportunistic experiments to constrain aerosol effective radiative forcing

Matthew W. Christensen et al.

Summary: Aerosol-cloud interactions are the most uncertain driver of radiative forcing due to human activities. Opportunistic experiments provide a way to investigate these interactions and improve assessments of aerosol radiative forcing and climate change.

Wavelet Analysis of Properties of Marine Boundary Layer Mesoscale Cells Observed From AMSR-E

Xiaoli Zhou et al.

Summary: Marine boundary layer clouds tend to organize into closed or open mesoscale cellular convection, with the cell wavelength commonly 40-80 km. The study shows that cell-scale CWP perturbations are good predictors of the WVP and RR perturbations, and there is no obvious dependence of cell scale on the environmental controlling factors for cells larger than 20 km.

Assessing the potential efficacy of marine cloud brightening for cooling Earth using a simple heuristic model

Robert Wood

Summary: A simple heuristic model is described to evaluate the potential for increasing solar reflection by augmenting the aerosol population below marine low clouds. The model accounts for the impact of various point sources of particle sprayers and performs well against estimates from large eddy simulation studies. The model underestimates brightening in most realistic conditions but shows promise in assessing the effects of aerosol injections on cloud brightening.
