2-D Analytical P-to-S and S-to-P Scattered Wave Finite Frequency Kernels

Nicholas Harmon et al.

Summary: In this study, the authors proposed finite-frequency kernels for scattered waves that improve the recovery of seismic velocity discontinuities, especially for shallow discontinuities. These kernels can also be used to recover the curvature of shallow discontinuity undulations and show potential for recovering the magnitude of the velocity contrast across a discontinuity.

Sensitivity kernels for receiver function misfits in a full waveform inversion workflow

J. H. E. de Jong et al.

Summary: Receiver functions have long been used to study Earth's major discontinuities. The traditional assumptions for mapping locations in the subsurface have been found to have limitations, but the use of adjoint tomography provides a potential solution. Sensitivity kernels for P-to-S converted waves have been calculated, revealing differences in sensitivity to P-wave speed and S-wave speed. The well-known trade-off between depth of the discontinuity and wave speed has also been observed, but can be significantly reduced by considering longer waveforms that include more surface reverberations.

High-frequency global wavefields for local 3-D structures by wavefield injection and extrapolation

Marta Pienkowska et al.

Summary: This paper presents a new method for studying wave propagation that can decipher small structures inside the Earth at high resolution. The method combines a global Green's functions database with a local 3-D model, offering flexibility and the ability to couple 3-D wavefields, suitable for wave propagation applications in various fields.

Imaging global mantle discontinuities: a test using full-waveforms and adjoint kernels

Maria Koroni et al.

Summary: The study proposes a novel method for imaging mantle discontinuities using full-waveform inversion, with synthetic data tests demonstrating rapid and accurate recovery of target topography. Known background elastic models result in fast and accurate convergence towards the correct target model, while unknown background models lead to slower but reasonable convergence towards the correct discontinuity topography model. The use of consistent data with Fréchet kernels has the potential to improve consensus on the nature of mantle discontinuities.
