Allopatric molting of Devonian trilobites

Ruiwen Zong et al.

Summary: Trilobite exuviae can provide information on the development and behavior of individual trilobites. Research on Late Devonian phacopidae trilobite exuviae suggests that they migrated to deep-water areas to molt, possibly to avoid predators and competing organisms. This behavior indicates that migratory behavior in modern arthropods may date back to the Devonian period.

Moulting in the Cambrian oryctocephalid trilobiteArthricocephalites xinzhaiheensisfrom Guizhou Province, South China

Yifan Wang et al.

Summary: Understanding the moulting behavior of trilobites through different growth stages, this study focuses on the detailed exploration of moulting behaviors in Arthricocephalites xinzhaiheensis based on a large number of disarticulated specimens. The findings show that the trilobites commonly utilized cephalic sutures and cephalothoracic joint for moulting, involving rotation or inversion of the cranidium to create a wide exuvial gape.

Injuries and molting interference in a trilobite from the Cambrian (Furongian) of South China

Ruiwen Zong

Summary: An injured specimen of Shergoldia laevigata was collected from the Furongian of Guangxi, South China, showing substantial transverse shortening of the left pleural segments and barely perceptible traces of healing. The injuries are interpreted as a sub-lethal attack from an unknown predator, potentially affecting the trilobite's molting process.

Trunk regionalization and functional morphology of the globally distributed trilobite Bathynotus from Cambrian Series 2 of China

Kaiyu Yang et al.

Summary: This study presents a case in trunk regionalization and functional morphology of redlichiid trilobites, based on a globally distributed Bathynotus collected from the base of the Kaili Formation in China's late Cambrian Series 2. The unique regionalization morphology in Bathynotus is considered closely related to its articulation structures and encapsulated enrolment ability, allowing the posterior trunk tergites with long pleural spines to fully cover the ventral cephalic shield during dorsal flexure. The regional integration of trunk tergites provides insight into the origin of their functional morphology and behavior in the evolutionary process of trilobite caudalization.

Ontogenetic moulting behavior of the Cambrian oryctocephalid trilobite Arthricocephalites xinzhaiheensis

Yifan Wang et al.

Summary: Moulting behaviors in trilobites are a crucial strategy during development, with studies showing variability within and between species. This study focused on the ontogenetic moulting behavior of Arthricocephalites xinzhaiheensis, revealing a gradual transition from Somersault configuration to Henningsmoen's configuration.
