Revisiting Late Pleistocene Loess-Paleosol Sequences in the Azov Sea Region of Russia: Chronostratigraphy and Paleoenvironmental Record

Jie Chen et al.

Summary: This study presents a refined chronostratigraphy and a multiproxy record of Late Pleistocene environmental dynamics in the Azov Sea region. The results help to better understand the climatic trends and forcing mechanisms in the region and provide important implications for chronostratigraphic correlations and the reconstruction of Late Pleistocene climate.

Revisiting the Taman peninsula loess-paleosol sequence: Middle and Late Pleistocene record of Cape Pekla

S. N. Timireva et al.

Summary: This study conducted integrated analysis on the loess-paleosol sequence of the Taman Peninsula, providing detailed lithological and stratigraphic data as well as optically stimulated luminescence age estimates for the first time. The research indicated that the formation of the continental series in this region started in the early Middle Pleistocene, with five well pronounced buried soil complexes.

Weathering and pedogenesis of the late Pleistocene and Holocene aeolian loess-paleosol sections in the Yellow River source area, NE Tibetan Plateau

Ya-na Jia et al.

Summary: This study investigates aeolian loess-paleosol sections on the northeast Tibetan Plateau to establish a chronostratigraphic framework and understand the weathering and pedogenesis of the soil. The results show a close relationship between the local climatic evolution during the late Pleistocene-Holocene and the evolution of the East Asian summer monsoon and the Westerlies.

Chronostratigraphy of a loess-paleosol sequence in the western Chinese Loess Plateau based on ESR dating and magnetostratigraphy

Yanning Niu et al.

Summary: This paper aims to establish a Quaternary chronological framework in the western area of the Chinese Loess Plateau using the traditional paleomagnetic method and quartz electron spin resonance (ESR) dating. The results are validated by analyzing magnetic susceptibility and grain-size variations. The established chronological sequence provides insights into the variation of the East Asian summer monsoon and paleoclimate evolution.

Environmental changes in southeastern Europe over the last 450 ka: Magnetic and pedologic study of a loess-paleosol profile from Kaolinovo (Bulgaria)

D. Jordanova et al.

Summary: This study presents a high-resolution investigation of a 450 ka old loess-paleosol profile, combining mineral magnetic and rock magnetic data with pedological parameters. The results demonstrate the complex response of the sediments to changes in source material and climate. The findings highlight the significance of using principal component analysis to understand the underlying sedimentary and environmental processes.

Chemical weathering in semi-arid soils of the Russian plain

P. Kalinin et al.

Summary: The study found that semi-arid soils in the Russian plain are characterized by a low intensity of current chemical weathering, which is mainly determined by the geochemical environment of the soil formation rather than the climate.

High-resolution analysis of the Likhvin loess-paleosol sequence (the central part of the East European Plain, Russia)

P. G. Panin et al.

Summary: The study of the loess-paleosol sequence in the center of the East European Plain has a long history, with a focus on the high-resolution analysis of the LPS at the Likhvin stratotype section. Through detailed analysis, the study reveals the history of paleosol formation from the Middle Pleistocene to the present, identifying distinct characteristics of paleosols from different periods. The findings suggest similarities between ancient paleosols and modern soils, as well as potential reclassification of certain paleosols to different stages in the Pleistocene.

Middle and Late Pleistocene loess of the Western Ciscaucasia: Stratigraphy, lithology and composition

Elena Mazneva et al.

Summary: This study compared and analyzed the structure and composition of loess-paleosol sequences in different parts of Western Ciscaucasia, finding a significant increase in accumulation rates in recent climatic macrocycles, potentially due to an increase in climate aridity. The spatial distribution patterns of loess thickness and material composition indicate that the main source of aeolian dust is located in the east, primarily originating from the alluvial plains of the Volga, Terek, Kuma, and Kura rivers.

The last 750 ka in loess-palaeosol sequences from northern France: environmental background and dating of the western European Palaeolithic

Pierre Antoine et al.

Summary: This study provides an overview of Middle Pleistocene loess-palaeosol sequences in northern France and discusses their palaeoclimatic significance in the context of global climatic cycles. After 30 years of research, these sequences are recognized as a fundamental archive for understanding the impact of interglacial-glacial climatic cycles and millennial events.

Summary: This study examines loess-palaeosol sequences in East-Central Europe during the last climatic cycle, focusing on MIS 5 period at the Palaeolithic site Moravsky Krumlov IV. Through multi-proxy analysis, it reveals Eemian luvisol, Early Weichselian chernozem, and other soil types, with evidence of forest, steppe, and tundra vegetation. The intensity of weathering is comparable to Czech records and differs from Hungarian sequences.

Palaeoenvironmental implications from Lower Volga loess - Joint magnetic fabric and multi-proxy analyses

Chiara Koltringer et al.

Summary: Studies on magnetic fabric and geochemical analyses of loess deposits in the Lower Volga region, Russia, show that the materials were mainly transported and deposited by wind and experienced post-depositional reworking to a large extent. Grain surface features suggest glacial and fluvial processes before aeolian deposition as loess, with primary aeolian magnetic fabrics indicating locally influenced westerly and north-westerly flows. The climate during the last glacial period in the Northern Caspian Lowland was cold and dry, with higher wind speeds and less variability in MIS 4 compared to MIS 3.

Enviromagnetic study of Late Quaternary environmental evolution in Lower Volga loess sequences, Russia

Chiara Koltringer et al.

Summary: The late Quaternary development of the Lower Volga region of Russia is characterized by alternating influence of marine and continental environments due to fluctuations in Caspian Sea level during the last glaciation. Detailed magnetic mineralogical analyses suggest a dry and cool climate during the time of loess deposition, with potential short episodes of more humid and warmer climate. The findings support decreased river discharge from the Russian Plain and Siberian Plain as the main factor causing the low Caspian sea level stand during the Atelian period.
