Shear deformation calculation of landslide using distributed strain sensing technology considering the coupling effect

Lei Zhang et al.

Summary: Deformation monitoring is important for understanding landslide evolution and evaluating stability. Distributed strain sensing (DSS) technology is widely used, but two challenges remain unresolved: the coupling behavior between DSS cable and soil, and how to convert strains into shear displacements. This study investigates the coupling deformation mechanism and proposes a strain-displacement conversion model, which is verified and shown to be accurate.

Soil-atmosphere interaction in earth structures

Yujun Cui

Summary: The interaction between soil and atmosphere was investigated through laboratory testing, field monitoring, and numerical modeling. The study revealed the formation of a dry layer in sand and soil cracking in clay during the evaporation process. Field monitoring showed that precipitation data alone could not accurately describe the variations in volumetric water content and suction in soils, highlighting the importance of considering water evaporation. A fully coupled thermohydraulic model was developed for numerical modeling and demonstrated good performance when compared to measurements.

Estimating soil water suction from texture, bulk density and electrical resistivity

Lin Liu et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new model that relates soil electrical resistivity to soil water suction, which can accurately estimate water suction values lower than the air entry value. Experimental results show that the model provides accurate estimations with root mean square errors less than 0.85 kPa, offering a new opportunity for in situ evaluation of water dynamics and coupled water and solute transport studies in the field.

Subsurface Multi-Physical Monitoring of a Reservoir Landslide With the Fiber-Optic Nerve System

Xiao Ye et al.

Summary: This study presents an innovative fiber-optic nerve system based on weak-reflection fiber Bragg grating to monitor a giant landslide in the Three Gorges Reservoir region in China. The system can measure and image the spatiotemporal distributions of temperature, moisture, and strain along boreholes in near real-time, providing unique insights into the subsurface thermo-hydro-mechanical link and the trigger of accelerated movements.
