Predicting wind erosion rate using portable wind tunnel combined with machine learning algorithms in calcareous soils, southern Iran

Monireh Mina et al.

Summary: The study successfully predicted wind erosion rates in different land uses and soil types in Fars Province, southern Iran, by combining easily measurable soil properties with data mining approaches. Results showed significant effects of land use and soil type on wind erosion rates, with bare lands and Entisols soil type exhibiting the highest rates. The non-linear regression models using easily measurable soil properties outperformed linear regression models, and support vector regression models coupled with a genetic algorithm showed the highest performance in predicting wind erosion rates.

A soil quality index using Vis-NIR and pXRF spectra of a soil profile

Gafur Gozukara et al.

Summary: A soil quality index (SQI) is used to manage soil for sustainable agriculture and ecology. This study characterized soil properties and SQI in a specific profile in Turkey, compared interpolation methods for mapping the distribution of soil properties and SQI, and evaluated the feasibility of using Vis-NIR and pXRF spectra to predict soil properties and SQI. The results showed significant variations of soil properties and SQI within the soil profile, with Vis-NIR having better prediction performances for some indicators and pXRF having better prediction performances for others. The combination of Vis-NIR and pXRF had the best prediction performance for SQI.

Determination of the threshold velocity of soil wind erosion using a wind tunnel and its prediction for calcareous soils of Iran

Mahrooz Rezaei et al.

Summary: Determining the threshold velocity (TV) is crucial for assessing wind erosion. This study used pedotransfer functions (PTFs) and easily measurable soil properties to predict the TV in calcareous soils of Fars Province, southern Iran. The results showed that soil surface shear strength (SS) and aggregate mean weight diameter (MWD) were the most influential parameters affecting the TV. The predictive models developed using SS and penetration resistance (PR), as well as MWD and PR, had the highest performance for predicting the TV. PTF 5, which only required easily measurable soil properties, was selected as the final model for TV prediction.

Developing spectrotransfer functions (STFs) to predict basic physical and chemical properties of calcareous soils

Hasan Mozaffari et al.

Summary: Spectroscopy in visible and near-infrared regions is a rapid, non-destructive, and cost-effective method for analyzing soil samples. This study used PLSR and SMLR approaches to predict soil properties and developed STFs models. The results showed that PLSR models performed better overall, while STFs models had good accuracy in predicting certain soil properties. The use of STFs models is recommended for predicting properties of calcareous soils.

Assessing the influencing factors of soil susceptibility to wind erosion: A wind tunnel experiment with a machine learning and model-agnostic interpretation approach

Yang Zhao et al.

Summary: This study explored the mechanism of soil susceptibility to wind erosion by using a machine learning algorithm and a model-agnostic interpretation approach. The results showed the relationships between multiple features and wind erosion rate. Machine learning algorithms and model-agnostic interpretation methods have the potential to improve the reliability and flexibility of inferring the mechanism of soil susceptibility to wind erosion.

Microplastics in agricultural soils from a semi-arid region and their transport by wind erosion

Mahrooz Rezaei et al.

Summary: This study investigates the presence and distribution of microplastics (MPs) in agricultural soils in Iran. The results show that MPs are heterogeneously distributed in both surface and subsurface soils, with fibres being the most common shape. The study also reveals high erosion rates of MPs in agricultural soils, suggesting that these soils act as both a temporary sink and a dynamic secondary source of MPs.

Summary: This study analyzed the effect of different pretreatments on soil particle size distribution and wind erosion modeling. The results indicate that HCl pretreatment may cause misleading results, while H2O2 treatment can disperse the samples completely.
