Estimating soil chemical properties by diffuse reflectance spectroscopy: Promise versus reality

Murray B. McBride

Summary: Reflectance spectroscopy in VNIR range is used to measure soil properties, but lacks accuracy compared to conventional testing methods. Correlations between spectral features and chemical properties may be indirect, and complex regression models used for predictions could overstate accuracy. While useful for general trends, these spectroscopic methods are not reliable enough to fully replace traditional soil testing.

The fundamental of the effects of water, organic matter, and iron forms on the pXRF information in soil analyses

Ncolas Augusto T. Rosin et al.

Summary: Portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) has great potential for various applications in soil science. This study evaluated the effects of moisture, soil organic matter content, and iron forms on pXRF data. The results showed that particle size distribution and elemental content influenced the counts. There was also a high correlation between pXRF data and particle size distribution and mineralogy attributes.

Prediction of soil nutrient content via pXRF spectrometry and its spatial variation in a highly variable tropical area

Marcelo Henrique Procopio Pelegrino et al.

Summary: Precision agriculture uses proximal sensors to accurately predict soil properties, reducing costs of traditional wet-chemistry analyses. This study aimed to predict exchangeable Ca2+ and available K+ and P in tropical soils using pXRF data, finding reliable predictions for Ca2+ and P but unsuccessful for K+. Testing multiple prediction models is important for precision agriculture, and fusion of data from different sensors may enhance predictions.

Differentiation of fine-textured podzolic soils controlled by climate and landscape in Taiwan

Yin -Chung Huang et al.

Summary: Podzolization in Taiwan is influenced by factors such as soil texture and precipitation, leading to the formation of different types of podzolic soils. Spodosols, characterized by a high accumulation of organometallic complexes, are the most common type in Taiwan. Ultisols and Inceptisols, on the other hand, are controlled by air temperature and landscape factors, with coarse-textured soils with higher leaching potential having the potential to develop into Spodosols.

Comparison of Cubist models for soil organic carbon prediction via portable XRF measured data

Kingsley John et al.

Summary: This study utilized pXRF measured data and the Cubist algorithm to estimate SOC, with Cubist 1 yielding the best model outcome for explaining the complex relationships between SOC and pXRF data. All Cubist models provided acceptable estimations of SOC in temperate floodplain soils, but future research should consider incorporating other auxiliary data.

Prediction of Soil Clay Content and Cation Exchange Capacity Using Visible Near-Infrared Spectroscopy, Portable X-ray Fluorescence, and X-ray Diffraction Techniques

Yuting Chen et al.

Summary: This study explores a novel data fusion method using visNIR, pXRF, and XRD techniques to predict clay content and cation exchange capacity, finding the combination of pXRF and visNIR to have the best performance. Fused data models significantly improved prediction accuracy compared to individual devices, with the addition of XRD data aiding in reducing errors. Models calibrated in one study area and transferred to another showed less promising validation metrics, with independent use of XRD showing the best overall performance.
