A comprehensive framework for identifying contributing factors of soil trace metal pollution using Geodetector and spatial bivariate analysis

Hangyuan Shi et al.

Summary: Accurate identification of pollution sources is crucial for controlling soil pollution. The widely used Positive matrix factorization (PMF) model faces challenges in objectively identifying soil pollution sources. In this study, a comprehensive source analysis framework was established, revealing the factors contributing to trace metal(loid) pollution in the Pearl River Delta, China. The results showed that the proposed approach improved the accuracy of source apportionment and provided a basis for soil pollution control.

Humic acids restrict the transformation and the stabilization of Cd by iron (hydr)oxides

Chenchen Qu et al.

Summary: The association of iron (hydr)oxides with organic matter plays a significant role in heavy metal mobility in natural soils and sediments. This study investigates the behavior of cadmium (Cd) during the formation of crystalline iron (hydr)oxides in the presence of humic acid (HA). The results show that HA promotes the adsorption of Cd onto amorphous iron (hydr)oxides but limits its partition to mineral aggregates.

Effect of land use pattern on the bioavailability of heavy metals: A case study with a multi-surface model

Liuye Cao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of different land use patterns on the speciation and distribution of heavy metals in soils. Organic matter was found to be the primary carrier of heavy metals, and the sensitivity of soil physicochemical properties to heavy metals followed the order of pH > SOM > goethite > clay. Moreover, converting paddy fields into vegetable or forest fields increased the environmental risk of heavy metals.

Effects of soil aging conditions on distributions of cadmium distribution and phosphatase activity in different soil aggregates

Quan-Ying Wang et al.

Summary: This study compared the distribution of cadmium (Cd) and phosphatase activity in soil under field and laboratory conditions. The results showed that Cd concentration was higher in field-aged soil, especially in deeper soil layers, and soil phosphatase activities were also higher in field-aged soil. Furthermore, available Cd fractions were found to be the key factors influencing the variations in enzyme activity.

Nano and sub-nano scale distribution of organic carbon species on soil particles revealed by Cs-STEM EELS

Yang Lu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the microscale distribution of organic carbon (C) species on clay-sized soil particles using spherical aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (Cs-STEM) coupled with electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). The results show that phenolic and aliphatic C are relatively independent of particle size fractions, while aromatic and carboxyl carbon exhibit significant variations. Additionally, the abundance of carboxyl C increases with decreasing particle size, while aromatic C decreases accordingly. The findings suggest that local organic C concentration is the main factor influencing the variations in oxidized and reduced C species in soil particles.

The role of interfacial reactions in controlling the distribution of Cd within goethite-humic acid-bacteria composites

Chenchen Qu et al.

Summary: Mineral-organic interfacial reactions play a significant role in the adsorption, distribution, and bioavailability of metal cations in soil systems. The study found that in composites, Cd adsorption is mainly governed by the entropy of Cd adsorption onto the organic fraction. Additionally, modeling suggests that humic acid is the primary scavenger of Cd, while bacteria become important in affecting Cd distribution under lower pH conditions.

Mechanistic investigation and modeling of Cd immobilization by iron (hydr)oxide-humic acid coprecipitates

Chenchen Qu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the binding mechanisms of Cd onto iron oxide-humic acid composites, revealing that Cd is mainly immobilized onto freshly-formed oxide nanoparticles and that humic acid promotes the precipitation of Fe clusters through ligand exchange reactions. Site masking reactions result in the migration of adsorbed Cd to iron oxide binding sites.

Lead (Pb) concentrations and speciation in residential soils from an urban community impacted by multiple legacy sources

Ezazul Haque et al.

Summary: Elevated soil lead concentrations in East Chicago were widespread and above regulatory limits, with levels increasing in neighborhoods with lower median household income. The soil lead was primarily adsorbed to iron and manganese oxides or humic acids, regardless of contamination levels. The lack of detectable crystalline insoluble forms of lead suggests that potential sources such as paint, ore, and slag are repartitioned into more bioavailable forms in the soil. These findings have implications for remediation efforts and human health due to significantly elevated blood lead levels in the community.
