Rock weathering controls the potential for soil carbon storage at a continental scale

Eric W. Slessarev et al.

Summary: This study shows that rock weathering can influence the abundance of poorly crystalline minerals and organic carbon in soil, but this influence is limited by weathering rates and climatic conditions in geographic regions. The geological source in soil has a certain impact on organic carbon storage.

Global stocks and capacity of mineral-associated soil organic carbon

Katerina Georgiou et al.

Summary: This study estimates the stocks and storage capacity of mineral-associated organic carbon globally by analyzing soil profiles. The results show that the current carbon stocks in non-permafrost mineral soils account for 66% to 70% of soil carbon in surface and deeper layers, respectively, but only 42% to 21% of the mineralogical capacity. Agricultural management regions and deeper soil layers exhibit the largest undersaturation of mineral-associated carbon. Soil carbon furthest from its mineralogical capacity is more effective at accruing carbon over years to decades.

Soil geochemistry as a driver of soil organic matter composition: insights from a soil chronosequence

Moritz Mainka et al.

Summary: This study investigates how stabilization mechanisms in soil change over time with soil development and how this is reflected in qualitative changes in soil organic matter (SOM). The results show that as soil weathering progresses, SOM becomes increasingly stabilized and microbial-derived. Complex plant-derived and predominantly microbial-derived organic matter play an increasingly important role in soil carbon stabilization mechanisms as the mineral soil matrix becomes increasingly weathered.

Deep in the Sierra Nevada critical zone: saprock represents a large terrestrial organic carbon stock

Kimber Moreland et al.

Summary: This study conducted in the Sierra Nevada reveals the coexistence of very old and relatively recent organic compounds in deep soil and saprock, suggesting that OC is prone to both active cycling and long-term protection from degradation. Furthermore, climate indirectly controls deep OC storage through its impact on regolith weathering.

The trajectory of soil development and its relationship to soil carbon dynamics

Corey R. Lawrence et al.

Summary: The amount of soil organic carbon (SOC) associated with soil minerals exhibits a threshold relationship with effective soil moisture, leading to variations in SOC storage mechanisms in soils from different chronosequence sites. Differences in effective soil moisture drive divergent pedogenic trajectories, resulting in variations in the form and depth distribution of secondary weathering products. Clay-rich argillic horizons and amorphous secondary minerals accumulate under different moisture conditions, influencing the dynamics of SOC storage and preservation.

Dynamic interactions at the mineral-organic matter interface

Markus Kleber et al.

Summary: Minerals and organic matter interact in soils and sediments, affecting biogeochemical cycling and ecosystem functioning. Minerals are assumed to protect organic matter from degradation and promote the persistence of carbon. Various mechanisms such as adsorption, catalysis, and oxidation are involved in mineral-organic interactions, highlighting the complexity of these processes in environments.

SoilGrids 2.0: producing soil information for the globe with quantified spatial uncertainty

Laura Poggio et al.

Summary: SoilGrids generates global maps of soil properties using advanced technology and machine learning methods, incorporating soil observations and environmental factors to predict and analyze various soil properties worldwide. The research shows a good predictive performance for global soil properties, but also reveals the need for more soil observation data, especially in high-latitude regions.
