Sulfate and phosphate oxyanions alter B/Ca and d11B in inorganic calcite at constant pH: Crystallographic controls outweigh normal kinetic effects

Joji Uchikawa et al.

Summary: We conducted inorganic experiments to investigate the effects of various oxyanions on the concentration and isotopic composition of boron in calcite. Sulfate and phosphate were found to have significant impacts on the incorporation of boron and isotopic fractionation during calcite precipitation. The observed kinetic trends of boron in the presence of sulfate and phosphate differ from previous studies, suggesting structural deformations of the calcite lattice due to the substitution of CO3. These findings have important implications for paleo-reconstructions of ocean chemistry.

Equilibrium Ca isotope fractionation and the rates of isotope exchange in the calcite-fluid and aragonite-fluid systems at 25 °C

Anna L. Harrison et al.

Summary: The equilibrium isotope fractionation between calcite and aragonite and Ca2+ aquo ion was estimated using the three-isotope method. The results showed that the equilibrium fractionation of aragonite-Ca2+(aq) was -0.80 +/- 0.10%o and calcite-Ca2+(aq) was -0.02 +/- 0.13%o. The experimental observations also revealed that the isotope exchange rates in aragonite were faster than in calcite.

Strontium isotope fractionation during precipitation of strontianite in aqueous solutions as a function of temperature and reaction rate

Mahmoud Alkhatib et al.

Summary: The study on Strontium isotope fractionation during the precipitation of strontianite revealed that the process is independent of specific precipitation rate (R*) and temperature (T) unlike calcite and aragonite. The difference in isotope composition between strontianite and bulk solution is mainly influenced by intermolecular forces in aqueous solutions and kinetic effects.

No ion is an island: Multiple ions influence boron incorporation into CaCO3

Michael J. Henehan et al.

Summary: Boron isotope ratios in marine calcium carbonate can be used to study marine calcifier physiology and reconstruct past atmospheric CO2 levels. Understanding the pathways of boron incorporation into calcium carbonate is still incomplete, with experimental data suggesting that boron and sodium may substitute in pairs to achieve local charge balance. Interface electrostatics may drive variability in the concentration and isotopic composition of boron in synthetic CaCO3.

Controls of temperature and mineral growth rate on Mg incorporation in aragonite

Vasileios Mavromatis et al.

Summary: The study found that the growth rate of aragonite is a major factor affecting the Mg partitioning coefficient, with temperature having a smaller but measurable effect. At similar growth rates, decreasing temperature leads to lower DMg values, while increasing fluid supersaturation with respect to aragonite is associated with increased Mg incorporation.

Summary: The incorporation of Ni and Co in aragonite was investigated as a function of mineral growth rate. The distribution coefficients of Ni and Co showed a stronger correlation with growth rate for Ni compared to Co. These coefficients can be used to estimate the equilibrium distribution coefficients.

Magnesium and carbon isotope fractionation during hydrated Mg-carbonate mineral phase transformations

Anna L. Harrison et al.

Summary: The experiment showed that at 25 and 35 degrees Celsius, nesquehonite transforms into dypingite through dissolution and re-precipitation, leading to significant exchange of Mg and C between solid and fluid. During the transformation, the initial isotopic composition of the solid phase was overwritten, indicating that isotopic equilibrium likely occurred between dypingite and fluid.

Nickel isotope fractionation as a function of carbonate growth rate during Ni coprecipitation with calcite

Cristina Castillo Alvarez et al.

Summary: Light Ni isotopes are preferentially incorporated into calcite during coprecipitation. The extent of Ni isotope fractionation between solid and aqueous fluid phase increases as calcite growth rate slows. The incorporation of Ni into calcite could be a significant sink of light Ni in the ocean.

The influence of Ca:CO3 stoichiometry on Ca isotope fractionation: Implications for process-based models of calcite growth

Jennifer Mills et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates a certain stoichiometry dependence of calcium isotope fractionation during calcite precipitation, with a small magnitude of change observed across different supersaturation conditions. The results suggest that for most carbonate precipitating environments, solution supersaturation will play a stronger role in determining calcium isotope fractionation than stoichiometry.

X-ray diffraction and spectroscopic study of SrxCa1-xCO3: Implications for equilibrium Sr2+ incorporation and carbon/oxygen isotope fractionation in aragonite

Xiang Wang et al.

Summary: Eight SrxCa1-xCO3 solid solutions with orthorhombic aragonite structure were synthesized, showing increased unit-cell parameters and volumes with higher Sr2+ concentrations and decreased vibrational frequencies. The vibrational contribution to the excess Gibbs free energy in SrxCa1-xCO3 solid solutions is considered limited, and the miscibility gap shrinks and disappears at higher temperatures.

Boron isotope fractionation during the formation of amorphous calcium carbonates and their transformation to Mg-calcite and aragonite

V Mavromatis et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of the non-classical crystallization pathway on the isotopic composition of marine calcifiers, finding that B distribution coefficients are significantly higher during the formation of Mg-ACC compared to calcite and aragonite. The results suggest that continuous exchange of solutes between the nanoporous solid phase and the fluid affects B isotope fractionation during Mg-ACC formation.
