Global change effects on biogeochemical mercury cycling

Jeroen E. Sonke et al.

Summary: Past and present anthropogenic mercury release has harmful effects on human health and has significant economic costs. The UNEP Minamata Convention on Mercury and global monitoring efforts aim to reduce mercury release and track its success. Global change factors such as deforestation and ocean stratification interact with the complex biogeochemical mercury cycle, leading to changes in mercury exposure. However, based on past declines in mercury release, it is expected that future policy impacts can be distinguished from global change effects at regional and global scales.

A synthesis of mercury research in the Southern Hemisphere, part 1: Natural processes

Larissa Schneider et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that mercury has a short atmospheric lifetime of 3-6 months, indicating that mercury emissions are mainly deposited within the same hemisphere. This highlights the importance of considering mercury sources, sinks, and impacts from a hemispheric perspective. However, there is a lack of comprehensive mercury data from the Southern Hemisphere, resulting in the use of estimates and inventories based on Northern Hemisphere data. This paper focuses on the unique characteristics of the Southern Hemisphere in terms of natural biogeochemical mercury cycling and identifies key differences that affect this cycling.

Comparing ecosystem gaseous elemental mercury fluxes over a deciduous and coniferous forest

Jun Zhou et al.

Summary: Sources of neurotoxic mercury in forests are dominated by atmospheric gaseous elemental mercury deposition. Our measurements show that GEM deposition includes various pathways and is highly ecosystem-specific, complicating global constraints of terrestrial GEM sinks.

Mercury Isotope Fractionation during Dark Abiotic Reduction of Hg(II) by Dissolved, Surface-Bound, and Structural Fe(II)

Lorenz Schwab et al.

Summary: This study contributes significantly to the database of Hg isotope enrichment factors for specific processes. The findings show that Hg(II) reduction by dissolved Fe(II) in open systems results in a kinetic mass-dependent fractionation (MDF) with a larger epsilon compared to other abiotic reduction pathways, and combining MDF with the observed mass-independent fractionation (MIF) allows the distinction from photochemical or microbial Hg(II) reduction pathways.

Deposition and Re-Emission of Atmospheric Elemental Mercury over the Tropical Forest Floor

Wei Yuan et al.

Summary: In a Chinese tropical rainforest, Hg-0 is released from the soil and absorbed by plants, which replenishes the deposited Hg-0. However, there is still limited understanding of the emission of Hg-0 from the forest floor, which hinders our knowledge of the Hg mass budget in forest ecosystems. This study used Hg stable isotopic techniques to investigate the biogeochemical processes of Hg-0 deposition and evasion in the soil. The results showed that Hg-0 is emitted from the soil during the rainy season and deposited during the dry season, and there is no isotopic fractionation during atmospheric Hg-0 deposition.

Demystifying mercury geochemistry in contaminated soil-groundwater systems with complementary mercury stable isotope, concentration, and speciation analyses

D. S. McLagan et al.

Summary: Interpretation of Hg geochemistry can be challenging due to the complexity of Hg transformation processes. In this study, we demonstrate the improved interpretation of Hg geochemistry by combining Hg stable isotope analyses with established methods. This approach allows us to identify specific Hg transformation processes and trace their behavior in environmental systems.

Summary: This study investigates the Hg concentration and isotopic composition in igneous rocks of the eastern Central Asian orogenic belt, revealing the potential of Hg isotopes as a tracer for the chemical dynamics of Earth's lithosphere. The results show a chemical stratification of Hg isotopic composition in the continental crust, as well as the recycling of surface Hg from the marine reservoir.

Gallium isotope constraints on the intense weathering of basalt

Wei Yuan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the potential of gallium (Ga) isotopes to trace continental weathering by studying a strongly-weathered latosol profile in South China. The results show significant variations in Ga isotope compositions and concentrations, suggesting the sensitivity of Ga isotopes in reflecting the loss of aluminum (Al) and involvement of iron (Fe) during weathering processes. The study highlights the importance of Ga elemental and isotope geochemistry in tracing continental weathering and global Ga cycling.

Arctic mercury cycling

Ashu Dastoor et al.

Summary: This article provides a comprehensive assessment of the present-day total mercury mass balance in the Arctic. The majority of mercury is transported to the Arctic via air and ocean transport, and the deposition mainly occurs in terrestrial ecosystems, particularly in soils. Rivers and coastal erosion transfer a significant amount of terrestrial mercury to the Arctic Ocean, in approximate balance with net terrestrial mercury deposition. The revised Arctic Ocean mercury mass balance suggests that the deposition to the ocean and mercury burial in inner-shelf sediments are underestimated, calling for the need for seasonal observations.

Petrology and geochemistry of basaltic rocks from north western Ethiopian plateau continental flood Basalt

Tilahun Tamirat et al.

Summary: Petrography and geochemical data of basaltic lavas from the north western Ethiopian plateau reveal three distinct groups: Alkali, tholeiitic, and transitional basalts. These groups show significant variations in major and trace element compositions, with the alkali and transitional basalts resembling oceanic island basalts and the tholeiitic basalts showing similarities to enriched mid oceanic ridge basalts. This suggests a complex mantle source involving components from OIB, E-MORB, and SCLM, leading to considerable source heterogeneity within and among the basaltic groups.

Surface-air mercury fluxes and a watershed mass balance in forested and harvested catchments

Chris S. Eckley et al.

Summary: The study found that Hg fluxes in forested ecosystems are primarily depositional, while in harvested areas they are mainly emission-driven. Differences in solar radiation were the primary driver of this shift. Surface-air Hg fluxes were larger than fluxes to water, accounting for a significant portion of the differences in Hg sequestration between forested and harvested catchments.

Summary: Mercury can exhibit significant mass-independent fractionation due to photo-chemical reactions at Earth's surface, resulting in distinct Delta Hg-199 values for different materials. Rocks from different mantle sources show varying Delta Hg-199 values, reflecting the influence of crustal recycling. Use of sequential extraction and mercury stable isotope analysis to assess remobilization of sediment-bound legacy mercury

Elizabeth R. Crowther et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that legacy mercury in streambed sediment can be remobilized and enter stream water as dissolved mercury, potentially being incorporated into streambed biofilm. Weakly-bound sediment mercury pools play a significant role in this process, contributing to the isotopic composition of dissolved mercury and being transferred to biofilm and suspended particulates along the flow path.
