Stable Sn isotope signatures of Mid-ocean ridge basalts

Jia-Xin She et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the Sn stable isotope compositions of 27 basalts from different geochemical and geological backgrounds in mid-ocean ridges to constrain the Sn isotope composition of the depleted mantle source. The study confirmed the limited Sn isotopic variability between fresh mid-ocean ridge basalts globally, suggesting the Sn isotopic homogeneity of the depleted mantle source.

Ancient and recycled sulfur sampled by the Iceland mantle plume

Eemu Ranta et al.

Summary: The study of sulfur isotopes in Icelandic basalts reveals the characteristics of the Icelandic mantle and the volatile heterogeneity of different mantle components. Part of the differences may result from fluid metasomatism in the upper mantle, while the other differences may be related to the lower mantle reservoir.

Spatial distribution and geochemical characterization of Icelandic mantle end-members: Implications for plume geometry and melting processes

Sunna Haroardottir et al.

Summary: In this study, a comprehensive geochemical database of Icelandic volcanic rocks was compiled to examine the spatial distribution and generation of geochemical heterogeneity in Iceland. The results show that mantle potential temperatures have a minor role, while lithospheric thickness plays a key role in generating geochemical heterogeneity.

Mantle source characteristics and magmatic processes during the 2021 La Palma eruption

James M. D. Day et al.

Summary: The 2021 eruption of La Palma was the first subaerial eruption in the Canary Islands in 50 years. The eruption exhibited temporal changes in mineralogy and bulk rock geochemistry, reflecting the evolution of volcanic activity. The study of lavas also provided insight into precursor seismicity and magma activity.

Origin of moderately volatile element depletion on differentiated bodies: Insights from the evaporation of indium from silicate melts

Deze Liu et al.

Summary: In comparison with the Sun and CI chondrites, moderately volatile elements (MVEs) are depleted in terrestrial planets and other small, rocky differentiated bodies in the inner solar system. Indium (In) deviates from the correlation between element volatility and nebular condensation temperature (T-c(50)), indicating that the traditional temperature scale may not be applicable to planetary evaporation. Evaporation experiments for basaltic melts show that the abundances of volatile elements, including In, on the Moon and Vesta display a depletion pattern that is different from the correlation on the T-c(50) scale, suggesting that volatile depletion on small bodies occurred under non-nebular environment. The volatile element composition of the bulk silicate Earth (BSE) could be explained by a combination of volatile loss during early accretion and the addition of volatile-rich materials later on.

Zinc isotope anomalies in primitive meteorites identify the outer solar system as an important source of Earth's volatile inventory

Paul S. Savage et al.

Summary: The source and timing of delivery of volatile elements to Earth are crucial for understanding the planet's evolution. Recent research suggests that primitive meteorites have provided insights into the isotopic anomalies of zinc from the terrestrial reservoir. The study shows that carbonaceous chondrites from the outer Solar System have distinct characteristics compared to other meteorites, and Earth falls in between these two components. Modeling based on these findings indicates that around 30% of Earth's zinc budget is derived from a small percentage of carbonaceous chondrite-like materials, with the remaining coming from other meteorites.

Potassium isotopic composition of various samples using a dual-path collision cell-capable multiple-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer, Nu instruments Sapphire

Frederic Moynier et al.

Summary: The Nu SapphireTM MC-ICP-MS is a high-precision instrument for measuring potassium isotopes, effectively addressing major isobaric interferences and providing high potassium sensitivity. The precision and accuracy of potassium isotopic data are influenced by several parameters, including total potassium concentration, matching of potassium intensities between sample and standard, and the presence of matrix elements.

A pebble accretion model for the formation of the terrestrial planets in the solar system

Anders Johansen et al.

Summary: Millimeter-sized pebbles are abundant in protoplanetary discs around young stars, and may play a role in the formation of terrestrial planets. A model suggests that inward-drifting pebbles can contribute to the growth of terrestrial planets, with the isotopic compositions of Earth and Mars supporting this theory. Additionally, the water and carbon budget of Earth could have been delivered by pebbles from an early generation.

Potassium distribution and isotope composition in the lithospheric mantle in relation to global Earth's reservoirs

Dmitri A. Ionov et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown wide ranges of K content and K-41 values in mantle materials from different tectonic settings, suggesting significant variations in K isotopes in the lithospheric mantle possibly due to diverse sources of K-bearing fluids and isotope fractionation during fluid-rock interaction.

Coordination change of Ge4+ and Ga3+ in silicate melt with pressure

Eleanor R. Mare et al.

Summary: The coordination environments of Ge and Ga in silicate glasses of different compositions in the CMAS system were studied at various pressures, revealing pressure and synthesis method-dependent changes in their average coordination numbers. The coordination numbers increase with pressure, and coordination changes occur at lower pressures in more depolymerised melt compositions.
