Mo isotopes archive oceanic sediments in post-orogenic lithospheric mantle

Feng Huang et al.

Summary: The super-chondritic Mo isotopic composition of the continental crust has been attributed to contributions from subducted oceanic slabs and/or sediments. The involvement of Ca-poor pelagic sediments rather than the lower continental crust and hydrated oceanic slab best accounts for the high Ce/Mo ratios and light delta Mo-98/95 values of the studied rocks. The recycling of subducted oceanic sediments has a key role in the deep recycling of Mo. [

Recycling of subducted Indian continental crust constrained by late Cretaceous mafic dykes in Central Lhasa block of the Tibetan plateau

Lu-Lu Hao et al.

Summary: The debate over whether subducted continental crust can be reintegrated into the post-collisional magmatism in continental collisional zones remains unresolved. This study examines the presence of post-collisional ultrapotassic rocks in the western part of the central Lhasa block (WCL) of the Tibet-Himalaya orogen, which exhibit characteristics that suggest the recycling of subducted Indian continental crust. However, the absence of late Cretaceous mafic magmatism in the WCL has made it difficult to determine the nature of the ancient subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) beneath the WCL. By analyzing mafic dykes from the TangraYumco area in the WCL, the researchers were able to gain insights into the lithospheric foundering process and provided important constraints on the nature of the ancient SCLM.

Summary: This study reassesses the effect of magma differentiation on Mo isotope fractionation, finding that fractional crystallization of amphibole, biotite, and Fe3+-rich minerals does not fractionate Mo isotopes in these granitoids based on data analysis from two plutons.

Contribution of continental subduction to very light B isotope signatures in post-collisional magmas: Evidence from southern Tibetan ultrapotassic rocks

Lu-Lu Hao et al.

Summary: Understanding the subduction and recycling of continental crust is crucial for reconstructing the long-term evolutionary history of Earth's mantle and crust. The Himalaya-Tibet orogen provides a natural laboratory for studying these processes. This study reports geochemical data of post-collisional ultrapotassic rocks in the Lhasa block, indicating a mantle source with recycled crustal components. The study contributes to our understanding of the geodynamic processes and thermal characteristics of the deep mantle in this region.

Nature of the Late Cretaceous mantle source beneath the western Lhasa terrane, southern Tibet: Insights from the newly discovered mafic intrusion

Ming Lei et al.

Summary: Recent studies show that the mantle source of the eastern Lhasa terrane was still depleted during the late stage of oceanic subduction, while the mantle source beneath the western Lhasa terrane was poorly understood due to limited exposure of mafic rocks. This study presents detailed petrological, geochronological, geochemical, and isotopic data for newly identified gabbroic rocks in the Taruocuo area of the western Lhasa terrane. The results suggest that these rocks were emplaced during the Late Cretaceous and originated from an enriched mantle source created by the interaction between mantle peridotite and subducted Neo-Tethyan oceanic sediment-derived melts.

Differentiation of continent crust by cumulate remelting during continental slab tearing: Evidence from Miocene high-silica potassic rocks in southern Tibet

Lu-Lu Hao et al.

Summary: The role of felsic igneous magmatism in crustal differentiation is crucial for the evolution and habitability of Earth system. However, the origin of felsic rocks and their genetic links to mafic magmas have been debated. This study investigates the TangraYumco high-silica potassic rocks in southern Tibet and reveals their relationship with ultrapotassic rocks and their genesis.

Summary: A deep neural network is used to automatically extract ground deformation from Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar time series. The method detects 2 mm deformation transients over the North Anatolian Fault and reveals a previously unrecognized slow earthquake. The study investigates how serpentinites in the forearc mantle and subducted lithosphere enrich the subarc mantle source of arc magmas.

Early Miocene Post-collision Andesite in the Takab Area, NW Iran

Hossein Azizi et al.

Summary: Research in the Takab area of NW Iran reveals Miocene magmatic rocks with ages of 18 to 15 Ma, including lava flows, subvolcanic rocks, and lavas interbedded with sedimentary layers. Chemical analysis shows that the rocks are mostly andesite with low MgO, Ni, Cr, Ti, Nb, and Ta contents, and high Li, Rb, K, Ba, and light rare earth elements. Different groups of rocks have varying Sr-87/Sr-86 ratios and ε(Nd)(t) values, indicating different levels of involvement of supra-crustal domains in their evolution. The collision and plate evolution have led to changes in crustal thickness and the development of shallow-basin sedimentary rocks in the region.

The Molybdenum isotope subduction recycling conundrum: A case study from the Tongan subduction zone, Western Alps and Alpine Corsica

Qasid Ahmad et al.

Summary: Molybdenum isotopes have considerable isotopic fractionation during metal cycling processes. Compared to non-subducted rocks, Mn-rich eclogitic metapelites exhibit lower molybdenum content and δMo-98/95 ratios, indicating significant loss of molybdenum during early subduction metamorphism.

Across-arc variations in Mo isotopes and implications for subducted oceanic crust in the source of back-arc basin volcanic rocks

Xiaohui Li et al.

Summary: Molybdenum isotope ratios in volcanic rocks from the Mariana subduction zone exhibit variations across different regions, suggesting the contribution of deep recycled oceanic crust to magma sources. High delta Mo-98/95 values indicate involvement of altered upper oceanic crust, while low values suggest the influence of deep recycled oceanic crust on back-arc basin lavas.
