A well-supported nuclear phylogeny of Poaceae and implications for the evolution of C4 photosynthesis

Weichen Huang et al.

Summary: Poaceae (the grasses) is a economically important angiosperm family, with a wide global distribution and diverse ecosystems. A comprehensive analysis of genomic and transcriptomic data was conducted to reconstruct the phylogeny of Poaceae, providing strong support for the monophyly of 11 subfamilies and suggesting multiple independent origins of C4 photosynthesis. This study offers valuable resources and insights for evolutionary analyses of the grass family.

Beyond RuBisCO: convergent molecular evolution of multiple chloroplast genes in C4 plants

Claudio Casola et al.

Summary: This study uses comparative analysis of chloroplast proteins in C-4 and C-3 grass species to reveal higher levels of molecular convergence in C-4 grasses. These findings have important implications for our understanding of the evolution of the C-4 photosynthesis pathway.

A synthetic C4 shuttle via the beta-hydroxyaspartate cycle in C3 plants

Marc-Sven Roell et al.

Summary: Plants rely on Rubisco for CO2 fixation, but the toxic byproduct 2-phosphoglycolate from Rubisco causes reduced photosynthetic yield in C3 plants, leading to energy-consuming photorespiration. By introducing the BHAC pathway to convert photorespiration metabolites into oxaloacetate, plants can bypass photorespiration in a highly efficient and resource-conserving manner to potentially enhance growth and yield.
