The menace of saffron adulteration: Low-cost rapid identification of fake look-alike saffron using Foldscope and machine learning technology

Amjad M. M. Husaini et al.

Summary: This study introduces two new methods to distinguish genuine saffron from fake in a user-friendly manner, using a smartphone and Foldscope for visualization. By applying staining methods and machine learning algorithms, the accuracy and convenience of saffron authentication are improved. The survey conducted on experimental samples reveals the prevalence of adulteration, but the quality of saffron significantly improves after removing adulterants.

DNA Accounting: Tallying Genomes to Detect Adulterated Saffron

Antoon Lievens et al.

Summary: The EU General Food Law aims to prevent fraudulent practices and food adulteration. A broadly applicable approach using digital PCR for detecting the substitution of biological materials has been presented, with scalable and rapid characteristics. The analysis of Saffron samples across the European market using DNA accounting and verification by NGS analysis has demonstrated the effectiveness of the method.
