Candidate Genes Associated with Abiotic Stress Response in Plants as Tools to Engineer Tolerance to Drought, Salinity and Extreme Temperatures in Wheat: An Overview

Daniela Trono et al.

Summary: Wheat is one of the most important staple food crops worldwide, but meeting the growing demand is challenging due to environmental stresses and degradation of arable land. Improving wheat's tolerance to abiotic stresses through genetic engineering is an effective strategy. Traditional breeding is limited by reduced genetic diversity, making genetic engineering a complementary approach to create new variability in wheat. Genetic engineering techniques like transgenesis and genome editing have been successfully used to enhance wheat's tolerance to drought, salinity, and extreme temperatures.
