Pregnancy-Specific Stress and Racial Discrimination Among US Women

Summary: This study examined the differences in stress and racial discrimination during pregnancy among women of different racial/ethnic groups in the US. The results showed that non-Hispanic White and other women of color reported higher distress during pregnancy compared to Black women, while other women of color experienced more stressful prenatal life events than non-Hispanic Whites. However, Black and other women of color experienced more ethnic discrimination throughout their lifetime and during their pregnancy than non-Hispanic Whites, with Black women experiencing five times the stress from these encounters compared to White women.

Are Experiences of Racial Discrimination Associated with Postpartum Depressive Symptoms? A Multistate Analysis of Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System Data

Summary: The study found that being upset by racial discrimination is associated with higher odds of postpartum depressive symptoms, especially among women of color with higher education levels. Therefore, addressing risk factors for postpartum depression, including racial discrimination, may help reduce racial disparities in maternal mental health.

Racial Discrimination and Trauma Symptoms: Further Support for the Race-Based Traumatic Stress Symptom Scale

Summary: This study examines the relationship between perceived discrimination, trauma symptoms, and mental health symptoms with the Race-Based Traumatic Stress Symptom Scale (RBTSSS), and validates the scores produced by the scale. The study finds strong correlations between perceived discrimination and trauma symptoms, and the RBTSSS is a significant predictor of trauma symptoms, with perceived discrimination being a stronger predictor than general stress.

Navigating Pregnancy and the Healthcare System during COVID-19: A Qualitative Study with Perinatal Women of Color

Summary: This study explores the experiences of perinatal BIPOC women during the COVID-19 pandemic, revealing issues such as lack of support from healthcare providers, experiences of blame and shame, and difficulties navigating unclear or ever-changing institutional policies. Participants suggested greater empathic communication from providers, more access to information and guidance for themselves and their babies, and a need for greater compassion during this exciting and busy time.

Stressful Experiences and Postpartum Depressive Symptoms Among Asian and Pacific Islander Women in the U.S.: The Significance of Racial Discrimination

Summary: Asian and Pacific Islander (API) women have a higher risk of postpartum depression (PPD) compared to other racial groups. However, there is limited research on the risk factors for PPD among API women in the U.S., particularly on the effects of racial discrimination. This study examined the association between various stressors, including racial discrimination, and postpartum depressive symptoms (PPDS) among API women in the U.S. The findings indicate that both family stressors and racial discrimination are independently associated with PPDS, and this association is influenced by the number of family stressors.

Critical Consciousness of Anti-Black Racism: A Practical Model to Prevent and Resist Racial Trauma
