The lymphatic vasculature: An active and dynamic player in cancer progression

Sara Rezzola et al.

Summary: The lymphatic vasculature not only transports immune cells, but also plays important roles in tumor growth and dissemination. Recent studies have uncovered various mechanisms by which the lymphatic system affects cancer progression, from inducing lymphangiogenesis to preparing metastatic niches and modulating the immune response. The interactions between tumor cells and lymphatic endothelial cells, as well as between immune cells and lymphatic endothelial cells, are crucial in both the tumor microenvironment and tumor-draining lymph nodes.

S100A8/A9 mediate the reprograming of normal mammary epithelial cells induced by dynamic cell-cell interactions with adjacent breast cancer cells

Seol Hwa Jo et al.

Summary: The direct co-culture of breast cancer cells with non-tumorigenic mammary epithelial cells leads to substantial changes in the molecular and functional characteristics of the mammary epithelial cells, with enhanced proliferation, migration, colony formation, and sphere formation capabilities. Dysregulation of cancer-related pathways is observed, along with upregulation of S100A8 and S100A9, suggesting a potential transition program mediated by these proteins in non-tumorigenic epithelial cells.

Intratumoral CD45+CD71+ erythroid cells induce immune tolerance and predict tumor recurrence in hepatocellular carcinoma

Jie Chen et al.

Summary: The study revealed that an accumulation of CD45(+)CD71(+) erythroid cells in HCC tissues could play a superior immunosuppressive role in the tumor microenvironment. They suppress T cells through generation of reactive oxygen species, IL-10, and TGF-beta, and their abundance in tumor tissue may serve as a valuable biomarker to predict HCC recurrence, with a prognostic value better than conventional scoring systems.

Association of lymph vessel density with occult lymph node metastasis and prognosis in oral squamous cell carcinoma

Simone E. S. Faustino et al.

Summary: ILVD and PLVD showed no significant association with occult lymph node metastasis or clinical follow-up, but ILVD was significantly associated with regional recurrence. PLVD was related to perineural invasion and had significant associations with disease-specific and disease-free survivals.

Tumor Immune Evasion Induced by Dysregulation of Erythroid Progenitor Cells Development

Tomasz M. Grzywa et al.

Summary: Tumor immune evasion is crucial for tumor progression, with EPCs identified as key regulators of the immune response in cancer. They suppress immune response and promote tumor growth, making targeting dysregulated EPC differentiation a promising therapeutic strategy.

Leveraging Decision Curve Analysis to Improve Clinical Application of Surgical Risk Calculators

Esmaeel Reza Dadashzadeh et al.

Summary: Decision curve analysis demonstrated that surgical risk calculators can effectively guide preoperative and postoperative management of patients undergoing hepatopancreaticobiliary surgery, such as readmission prevention and venous thromboembolism intervention. The performance of the ACS-SRC and POTTER calculators in predicting postoperative complications was comparable, with each showing superiority within specific risk threshold ranges.

Sema4C modulates the migration of primary tumor-associated lymphatic endothelial cells via an ERK-mediated pathway

Jin Peng et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the role of Semaphorin 4C (Sema4C) in promoting tumor-associated characteristics in LECs in cervical cancer. Overexpressing Sema4C was found to stimulate the migratory ability of TLECs, downregulate E-cadherin expression, and stimulate ERK phosphorylation, while knocking down Sema4C had the opposite effects. The Sema4C/ERK/E-cadherin pathway was identified as critical for the migration of TLECs, potentially promoting lymph node metastasis and making Sema4C a promising target for cervical cancer treatment with lymphatic metastasis.
