Cognitive processing of emotional information during menstrual phases in women with and without postpartum depression: differential sensitivity to changes in gonadal steroids

Summary: Gonadal steroids (GSs) play a central role in the onset of postpartum depression (PPD) and the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. This study investigated the relationship between cognitive processing of emotional information and naturally occurring hormonal fluctuations in women with and without previous PPD. The results revealed menstrual-phase-specific differences in cognitive processing of emotional information in women with previous PPD, suggesting a sensitivity to gonadal steroid fluctuations associated with PPD.
