Microscopic mechanism for the effect of potassium on heterogeneous NO-char(N) interaction: A theoretical account

Ji Liu et al.

Summary: Reburning is an effective method for the clean and efficient utilization of biomass with low NOx emissions. The presence of potassium (K) in biomass affects the reaction between NOx and char nitrogen, thereby influencing the removal efficiency of NOx. This study investigated the effects of K on heterogenous NO-char(N) reactions using density functional theory (DFT) and calculated the rate constants for these reactions. The results showed that the presence of K facilitated the heterogeneous reduction of NO and inhibited the migration of char(N), leading to changes in the reaction path. This research provides theoretical guidance for controlling NOx emissions during biomass reburning.

Ni nanoparticle coupled surface oxygen vacancies for efficient synergistic conversion of palmitic acid into alkanes

Yan Zeng et al.

Summary: Ni nanoparticles supported on CeO2 carriers, prepared by hydrothermal synthesis, exhibited superior catalytic activity for the hydrodeoxygenation of palmitic acid, achieving a pentadecane selectivity of 94.8% under mild reaction conditions. The outstanding catalytic performance was attributed to the synergistic effect between the Ni nanoparticles for activating hydrogen and the abundant oxygen vacancies for adsorbing oxygen from palmitic acid. This study provides a novel strategy for efficient conversion of biomass oil into biofuel.

Coeffect of pyrolysis temperature and potassium phosphate impregnation on characteristics, stability, and adsorption mechanism of phosphorus-enriched biochar

Han Zhang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the coeffect of pyrolysis temperature and K3PO4 impregnation on the characteristics and adsorption behavior of bamboo biochar. The results showed that medium-temperature pyrolysis (550-750 degrees C) produced biochar with higher adsorption capacity for heavy metals, mainly through the adsorption of Cd (II) by O-containing groups, PO43-, and P2O74-.

Insights into the Determining Effect of Carbon Support Properties on Anchoring Active Sites in Fe-N-C Catalysts toward the Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Jing He et al.

Summary: Previous investigations on Fe-N-C materials have mainly focused on synthetic methods, active site identification, and structure optimization, neglecting the intrinsic properties of carbon supports. This study utilizes GO and rGO as support models to explore the influence of carbon support structure properties on active sites and ORR performance, providing insights into the distribution of active sites and the work function-ORR kinetics relationship.

Product distribution-tuned and excessive hydrocracking inhibiting in fatty acid deoxygenation over amorphous Co@SiO2 porous nanorattles

Min Lin et al.

Summary: An amorphous Co-based catalyst with porous structure and large specific surface area was synthesized and its performance in deoxygenation reaction was investigated. The results showed that the amorphous Co catalyst exhibited a better inhibition of hydrocracking and promoted hydrodeoxygenation selectivity compared to other catalysts. However, the balance between excessive and insufficient hydrogenation was crucial.

Advances in catalytic decarboxylation of bioderived fatty acids to diesel-range alkanes

Bi-Shuang Chen et al.

Summary: Biodiesel is an important alternative fuel with great sustainability and environmental advantages. The decarboxylation of bioderived fatty acids is an effective method for green diesel production, producing high caloric value alkanes that are irreversibly formed and exist in liquid form. This review discusses the progress in both chemo- and bio-catalytic decarboxylation reactions and their pros and cons for green fuel synthesis, with particular focus on the mild biocatalytic decarboxylation reactions that have not been fully explored in previous reviews on green diesel production.

Bimetallic Ni and Mo Nitride as an Efficient Catalyst for Hydrodeoxygenation of Palmitic Acid

Xiangze Du et al.

Summary: This study discovers that bimetallic Ni-Mo nitrides can be obtained by a non-nitridation method and serve as efficient catalysts for the hydrodeoxygenation reaction in the production of liquid fuels from biomass. The Ni3Mo3N samples show high selectivity and activity in the hydrodeoxygenation of palmitic acid, and they can be recycled with slight decay in catalytic activity.

Potassium-Assisted Fabrication of Intrinsic Defects in Porous Carbons for Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction

Li-Li Ling et al.

Summary: A K+-assisted synthetic strategy is developed to fabricate porous carbon with abundant intrinsic defects and complete elimination of heteroatom via direct pyrolysis of K+-confined metal-organic frameworks. The resulted carbon material exhibits ultrahigh CO Faradaic efficiency in CO2 electroreduction, which surpasses the performance of MOF-derived carbon. Theoretical calculations suggest that the carbon defects in the K-defect-C favor CO2 adsorption and accelerate the rate-determining COOH* intermediate formation.

In situ coupling of lignin-derived carbon-encapsulated CoFe-CoxN heterojunction for oxygen evolution reaction

Xuliang Lin et al.

Summary: The study explores a hybrid electrocatalyst of CoFe alloy and CoxN heterojunction encapsulated in N-doped carbon support for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The in situ coupled electrocatalyst exhibited outstanding OER activity and stability. DFT calculations showed that the heterojunction and N-doped graphitic encapsulation enhanced the OER activity and stability by improving electron transfer efficiency.

Facile and scalable preparation of cage-like mesoporous carbon from lignin-based phenolic resin and its application in supercapacitor electrodes

Wei Li et al.

Summary: A novel cage-like lignin-based phenolic resin was successfully synthesized through direct spray drying of the mixture of phenolic resin and unmodified lignin. The resulting lignin-based phenolic resin was pre-carbonized and carbonized using KOH to produce mesoporous carbon materials for use as supercapacitor electrodes. This study offers a simple and scalable approach to prepare cage-like mesoporous carbon with excellent electrochemical performance from lignin-based phenolic resin, providing a promising route for lignin valorization in energy storage materials.

One-step synthesis of highly active and stable Ni-ZrO2 catalysts for the conversion of methyl laurate to alkanes

Huiru Yang et al.

Summary: A series of Ni-ZrO2 catalysts with different Ni loading were prepared and evaluated for methyl laurate conversion. The 10Ni-ZrO2 catalyst showed the smallest Ni crystal size, the highest atomic content of surface Ni0, surface oxygen vacancy and Ni-O-Zr interfaces, and exhibited the highest activity and stability in the conversion of methyl laurate to alkanes. The catalyst also demonstrated wide applicability for transforming crude oils into alkanes.

Solvent-mediated selectivity control of furfural hydrogenation over a N-doped carbon-nanotube-supported Co/CoOx catalyst

Virendra Ranaware et al.

Summary: The role of the solvent in furfural conversion was investigated in this study. It was found that the presence of Bronsted acid sites and the participation of hydrogen atoms from water molecules favor the production of cyclopentanone/cyclopentanol products, while the absence of Bronsted acid sites and the participation of hydrogen atoms from ethanol molecules result in the dominant formation of tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol.
