Multi-scale numerical simulation of fluidized beds: Model applicability assessment

Shuai Wang et al.

Summary: In the past few decades, multi-scale numerical methods have been developed for modeling dense gas-solid flow in fluidized beds. However, ambiguity remains in the selection of sub-models, parameters, and numerical resolution, as well as the coupling of operating conditions, bed configurations, polydispersity, and additional forces. This review assesses the applicability of multi-scale numerical methods in predicting dense gas-solid flow in fluidized beds, focusing on inter-particle collision models, inter-phase interaction models, collision parameters, and polydispersity effect. The resolution-efficiency trade-off and model validations under multiple flow conditions are highlighted for further improvement.

Particle behaviours of biomass gasification in a bubbling fluidized bed

Dali Kong et al.

Summary: The study uses a particle-scale computational fluid dynamics-discrete element method to investigate biomass gasification in a bubbling fluidized bed reactor, exploring the effects of operating temperature and steam to biomass ratio on particle mixing and heat transfer modes. Increasing operating temperature and S/B ratio can enhance biomass mixing index and promote chemical reactions and heat transfer.

Modelling of gas conversion with an analytical reactor model for biomass chemical looping combustion (bio-CLC) of solid fuels

Daofeng Mei et al.

Summary: Manganese ore EB exhibits higher reactivity with syngas but lower reaction rate with CH4 compared to other manganese ores. Improving the contact between volatiles and bed material is crucial for enhancing combustion performance in the CLC process.

Particle-scale study of coal-direct chemical looping combustion (CLC)

Junjie Lin et al.

Summary: The hydrodynamic and thermochemical characteristics in the coal-direct chemical looping combustion (CLC) process were studied using a self-developed computational fluid dynamics - discrete element method (CFD-DEM) approach. The results showed that increasing the coal feeding rate improved the combustion efficiency, while finer oxygen carriers promoted the conversion of gas products. In addition, a dual-side coal feeding arrangement significantly improved the system's uniformity.

Redox degrees of iron-based oxygen carriers in cyclic chemical looping combustion using thermodynamic analysis

Wei-Hsin Chen et al.

Summary: Chemical looping combustion (CLC) using iron-based oxygen carriers can efficiently capture carbon dioxide and produce high yields of CO2 and H2O under specific operating conditions. Fe3O4 and Fe2O3 are the major components of iron in OCs during most reduction and oxidation reactions. Decreasing oxygen input leads to increased carbon formation in the system.

Eulerian-Lagrangian simulation of chemical looping combustion with wide particle size distributions

Dali Kong et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of particle size distribution width on the performance of chemical looping combustion in a three-dimensional dual circulating fluidized bed. A wider PSD width leads to shorter particle residence time, increased oxygen transport efficiency, and improved fuel conversion rates.

Numerical study on the effective utilization of high sulfur petroleum coke for syngas production via chemical looping gasification

Zhenwei Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the syngas production and sulfur conversion mechanisms during the CLG process with petcoke as fuel. The results show that higher temperature and steam flow rate can improve the conversion of carbon and sulfur in petroleum coke, but increasing gas flow rates may lead to more intense fluidization and increased CO2 and SO2 production.

Sulfur fate during in-situ gasification chemical looping combustion (iG-CLC) of coal

Jinchen Ma et al.

Summary: This study investigated the fate of sulfur during in-situ gasification chemical looping combustion of coal, highlighting the resistance of Fe2O3/Al2O3 to sulfur and the positive effects of temperature and oxygen/fuel ratio on the conversion of sulfur compounds. Additionally, the research demonstrated the desulfurization function of coal ash and the effective conversion of sulfur-containing gases into SO2 using oxygen carrier materials.
