Injection system modification and optimization for performance enhancement and emission reduction in a light-duty diesel engine fuelled by biodiesel-water emulsion

Sudarshan Gowrishankar et al.

Summary: Adding water to carbon-neutral biodiesel in conventional diesel engines reduces NOx and smoke emissions while improving engine performance. This study modified a mechanical fuel injection system to an electronic CRDi system for utilizing biodiesel-water emulsion. Results showed that the CRDi system improved fuel consumption, thermal efficiency, and reduced emissions compared to the mechanical injection system. Using the flexible injection system with biodiesel-water emulsion reduces engine exhaust emissions while improving performance characteristics.

The combined effect of water and nanoparticles on diesel engine powered by biodiesel and its blends with diesel: A review

Chuanhao Jin et al.

Summary: In recent years, the search for new clean fuels to replace fossil diesel has become crucial due to the shortage of fossil oil resources and environmental pollution problems. Biodiesel has gained attention for its environmental friendliness, renewable features, and wide range of sources. However, the use of biodiesel often leads to higher NOx emissions. Water, as a fuel additive, can lower the combustion temperature and reduce NOx emissions but also brings new challenges like increased CO and HC emissions. Nanoparticles are expected to address these issues with their higher surface area-to-volume ratio and catalytic properties. Therefore, it is important to investigate the effects of nanoparticles and water on the performance of biodiesel and its blends with diesel.

Experimental investigations on biodiesel-water emulsion as a potential fuel for early and late injection based premixed lean combustion

Sudarshan Gowrishankar et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of biodiesel-water emulsion as a potential fuel for low temperature combustion, exploring two different fuel injection strategies to achieve lean premixed combustion. The results indicate potential advantages of the emulsion in terms of load range and reductions in oxides of nitrogen and smoke emissions.

Combustion Modeling Approach for the Optimization of a Temperature Controlled Reactivity Compression Ignition Engine Fueled with Iso-Octane

Mattia Pelosin et al.

Summary: In this study, a low temperature combustion system called Temperature Controlled Reactivity Compression Ignition (TCRCI) is presented, and a numerical optimization of the hardware and the operating parameters is proposed. The system aims to simplify the Reaction Controlled Compression Ignition engine (RCCI) by replacing direct injection of high reactivity fuel with heated injection of low reactivity fuel. A Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model is used to simulate the combustion, and the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm is integrated to optimize the system. The optimized configuration improves net efficiency and reduces CO emissions.
