Porous organic polymers with diverse quaternary phosphonium units for chemical fixation of CO2 with low concentration

Yuanfei Bao et al.

Summary: In this study, porous organic polymers (POPs) with diverse quaternary phosphonium units were synthesized and used as catalysts for cycloaddition reaction of CO2 and epoxides. The POPs exhibited excellent catalytic properties even under mild conditions and without the need for a co-catalyst. The catalytic activities of the POPs were found to increase with the steric hindrance of the quaternary phosphonium units.

One-step supramolecular construction of Lewis pair poly(ionic liquids) for atmospheric CO2 conversion to cyclic carbonates

Yuke Zhang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a one-step strategy to construct Lewis pair heterogeneous catalysts for CO2 conversion through the coordination of amino-functionalized poly(ionic liquid) and metal cations. The strength and ratio of Lewis acidic/basic sites can be tuned by regulating the type/content of metal ions, enabling efficient acid/base cooperation in CO2 cycloaddition. The synergistic effect of M2+, Br-, and C-2 proton on the imidazolium ring activates both CO2 and epoxides, leading to high yields and selectivity of cyclic carbonates under atmospheric pressure and low temperature without cocatalyst.

Swellable poly(ionic liquid)s: Synthesis, structure-property relationships and applications

Hao Hu et al.

Summary: Swellable poly(ionic liquid)s (SPILs) are ionic polymers with unique swelling ability, which depends on the compatibility of polymer chains with solvent molecules and the dissociation of ionic groups in solvents. Compared to non-swellable poly(ionic liquid)s, SPILs have good solvent affinity and distinctive physicochemical properties, making them widely applicable in catalysts, actuators, sensors, absorbents, and separation membranes, among others.

Atmospheric-pressure synthesis of glycerol carbonate from CO2 and glycerol catalyzed by protic ionic liquids

Cong Luo et al.

Summary: In this study, a one-pot synthesis of valuable glycerol carbonate (GC) from CO2, glycerol (Gly), and styrene oxide (SO) was successfully achieved using easily prepared protic ionic liquids (ILs) under atmospheric pressure. The high catalytic activity of 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-enenium iodide (HDBUI) was attributed to the strong nucleophilicity and substrate activation provided by the synergistic effect of the protic HDBU+ cation and I- anion. High GC yields were also obtained when simulated flue gas and crude Gly were used as substrates.

Guoqing Li et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the recent progress in the synthesis and post-synthesis of porous poly(ionic liquid)s (PILs) catalysts for carbon dioxide (CO2) cycloaddition. The synthesis methods and catalytic behaviors of porous PILs in CO2 cycloaddition are discussed. It is highlighted that the rational design of IL monomers and optimization of synthetic parameters are crucial for developing high-performance catalysts.

Efficient synthesis of dimethyl carbonate via transesterification of ethylene carbonate catalyzed by swelling poly(ionic liquid)s

Xin Wang et al.

Summary: The synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) via transesterification of ethylene carbonate (EC) and methanol (MeOH) was an environmental and practical strategy. Poly(ionic liquid)s (PILs) with swelling abilities were synthesized, and their swelling ability in methanol (MeOH) could be modulated by changing the cross-linker content and chain length of alkyl-substituents on imidazolium. The swollen PILs showed a porous cross-linked network structure and exhibited excellent catalytic activities for the transesterification reaction.

CO2 atmosphere enables efficient catalytic hydration of ethylene oxide by ionic liquids/organic bases at low water/epoxide ratios

Tong Ding et al.

Summary: By utilizing CO2 as the reaction atmosphere and binary catalysts, efficient production of MEG at low H2O/EO ratios with high yields and selectivities was achieved. The altered reaction pathway involving cycloaddition of EO with CO2 followed by hydrolysis of EC to generate MEG and recover CO2 was found to be more kinetically favorable according to DFT calculations.

Poly(ionic liquid)s with superior swelling and enrichment properties in solvents

Bihua Chen et al.

Summary: A series of PILs based on VSpIm and NaSS were successfully synthesized and characterized, showing distinct swelling properties in solvents with delta(T) > 24.5 MPa1/2. The molar swelling ratio (Q(M)) was linearly positively correlated with the delta(T) value. The PILs also exhibited excellent enrichment properties in mixed solvents and showed higher catalytic activity in the hydration of alkyne compared to heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysts.
