Two-Stage Bio-Hydrogen and Polyhydroxyalkanoate Production: Upcycling of Spent Coffee Grounds

Beom-Jung Kang et al.

Summary: Coffee waste can be used to extract oil and produce polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA). The extracted oil can also be used for biohydrogen production. The oil extraction yield was 14.4% and accounted for 97% of the oil in the waste. The extracted waste had a higher sugar concentration and resulted in more hydrogen production. Additionally, using the extracted oil for culture resulted in higher cell dry weight, PHA production, and PHA content.

Effect of nanoparticles synthesized from green extracts on dark fermentative biohydrogen production

Oznur Yildirim et al.

Summary: Research on the production of nanoparticles using sustainable methods and different leaf extracts as reducing agents has made progress. This study synthesized two types of iron oxide nanoparticles using olive leaf extract and microalgae extract as reducing agents, and investigated their impact on bio-hydrogen yield. The synthesized nanoparticles were characterized and showed stable appearance with mean particle sizes of 90.26 and 124.68 nm. Iron oxide nanoparticles produced from olive leaf extract were more effective in dark fermentation. Addition of 200 mg/L olive leaf extract-based nanoparticles and 300 mg/L microalgae extract-based nanoparticles increased hydrogen production capacity by 41% and 28% respectively.
