Synthesis of long chain alkanes via aldol condensation over modified chitosan catalyst and subsequent hydrodeoxygenation

Xuelai Zhao et al.

Summary: This paper successfully synthesized long carbon chain compounds by aldol condensation of furfural and levulinic acid using modified chitosan catalyst, which were further converted to long-chain branched alkanes for potential application as jet fuel components. The catalyst played an important role in promoting the formation of condensation products and preventing side reactions.

Synergistic Effect in Vapor Phase Hydrodeoxygenation on USY Zeolite Supported Ir-Pt Catalyst: Role of Pentacoordinated Al3+ Ions

Cristina Loricera et al.

Summary: The positive role of pentacoordinated Al-V sites in the catalyst behavior was evidenced in the vapor phase hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of phenol. The USY zeolite was more efficient than ZSM-5, and the superior activity of Ir-Pt/USY was attributed to the cumulative effects of various factors working in synergy.

Synthesis of High-Density Aviation Biofuels from Biomass-Derived Cyclopentanone

Zhanchao Li et al.

Summary: The study developed an efficient synthetic approach using one-pot two-step reactions and solvent-free reactions to convert biomass-derived molecules into ring-structured alkanes suitable for transportation fuels or jet fuels, with high overall isolated yields of 68-90%. The obtained biofuels have high densities and high net volumetric heating values, with other fuel properties comparable to some well-known commercial synthetic fuels, showing potential for practical applications.

Conversion of bio-jet fuel from palm kernel oil and its blending effect with jet A-1 fuel

Elaine Siew Kuan Why et al.

Summary: The research shows that 8% Pd/C catalyst with palm kernel oil after deoxygenation can achieve the best yield and fuel selectivity. The blending of 20% volume of palm kernel oil-derived bio-jet fuel with Jet A-1 fuel is considered the most promising ratio, as it has the most favorable low temperature fluidity and good combustion characteristics.

Synthesis of branched alkane fuel from biomass-derived methyl-ketones via self-aldol condensation and hydrodeoxygenation

Shan Feng et al.

Summary: The production of highly branched alkanes through self-aldol condensation of MIBK followed by HDO is promising for aviation fuel, with magnesium-aluminum mixed oxides playing a key role in the aldol condensation reaction. The yield of C12 oxygenate condensation product reached 70.3% under optimal conditions. The hydrodeoxygenation process using Pd/HZSM-5 catalysts produced highly branched alkanes with a low freezing point.

Chemical Composition and Low-Temperature Fluidity Properties of Jet Fuels

Alirio Benavides et al.

Summary: This study experimentally evaluated the effect of chemical composition on the low-temperature fluidity properties of jet fuels. The composition of 70 samples of Jet A1 and Jet A fuels was determined using gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry, allowing the quantification of the content of five main families of hydrocarbons. The study identified individual components or hydrocarbon classes contributing to increased or decreased property values.
